Is Ro water with it for discus and plants if you live in michigan?

  • is ro water worth it with discus and live plants? i mean, you buying an ro unit, which is hunderds of dollars, to take out all of the impurites of the water, all the phosphates all the stuff that creates algea problems, stuff that hurts fish and plants, bacteria and cholorine...etc. then, you have to buy products such as equalibirum and alkaline and acid buffers to get your PH of the water to where you need it to be, and you got to avoid ph swings...etc......so dosent it just completely defeat the purpose? i mean, im goign to set up a 125 gallon discus tank this sumer, can someone please tell me if its worth all the trouble and money??? i live in DETROIT, Michigan, best freshwater supply in the world, surouned by 3 great lakes......do i need ro water for discus?

  • Answer:

I'm not well acquainted with the Detroit tap water, but if you've got any readable levels of heavy metals, ammonia, nitrites, or nitrates, phosphates, sulfates, silicates, or anything else, yes, it would be well worth it to invest in an RO unit. You need to remove these things, along with everything else, to replace it with the PROPER elements-- calcium, magnesium, carbonates, potassium, chloride, etc.
