How do regular ordinary goldfish mate?

Can my betta's mate with goldfish in the same tank?

  • I just recently put my male betta in a tank that conatins two goldfish. The tank is 10 gallons and has a filter as well as a heater. My female and male betta's are ready to mate, but im worried about putting in the female's (2 of them) in with the male to mate if there are goldfish in the tank. Is it safe to do it? I heard goldfish eat anything, including fish eggs. Im really worried. I havent put the females in yet but the male is in there.

    Urgh, i get so annoyed with people harping on about goldfish space in a tank. As long as they happy. Space is for your to judge and decide. Im sure you wont harm your fish. Well, to answer your question. No its not a good idea to put those fish together as goldfish will most definately eat the eggs. They are hungry all the time. If you are looking to mate your fish, you need to put them in a separate tank. The bettas could also be stressed with so many goldfish swimming about that the last thing they would want to do is mate. Get another tank and everything should be ok.

Why do you have 2 goldfish and a betta in a 10 gallon tank?! WAY WAY too small! Goldfish need 10+ gallons **per fish**, the betta needs 2+ You also have tropical fish mixed with cold water fish - your entire setup is a disaster already, don't add the females! The goldfish need a larger tank, and the betta needs a heater.

Whoever said they have kept goldfish in a bowl for 3 years - how did you do that???! Anyways, you've got 2 bettas and 2 goldfish in a ten gallon. I've made the mistake of not researching before buying these fish called mollies, but I learned my lesson and fixed the situation. What you need to do (least expensively) is to get two separate bowls for your bettas, each at least 2.5 gallons (won't require a filter, just frequent water changes) and leave the goldfish where they are. They will not live as long without a bigger tank than a 10 though. Or, you could buy a bigger tank for the goldfish and another 10 gal for the bettas with plenty of plants for the female to hide in or else the male will harrass her to death. And bettas are very hard to breed. And this would all be very expensive. Good luck with whatever you decide to do :)

First of all. Betta and Goldfish cannot be housed together because Betta's are tropical fish that need waters of 72-80-F and Goldfish are cold water fish that do not need a heater! Second, 10 gallons is too small for two goldfish. Maybe enough for one, if properly cleaned/filtered. With your inexperience please do not breed betta's. You can't even properly house fish and wouldn't know what "fry" is. Do research, get your tanks set and good luck.

I agree with kelly, except the goldfish need 30gal because its 20gal for the first fish, and then you and 10gallons for every extra goldfish,and that is only for fancies. Commons need 30gal and +15 for every extra. Your tank is extremely small. aLSO the goldfish need a filter that is for twice the size of your actual tank. I suggest you upgrade the tank, and when you take the goldfish out your bettas will be VERY happy (:

no its not a good idea as goldfish are coldwater fish and betta's NEED heaters plus the female wont produce good eggs in wrong water conditions and goldfish will eat the eggs

you should keep the betta fish seperated from the goldfish because bettas are dominate fish and they will fight with other fish....these fish cannoy breed with eachother

Oh jeez, you beta's do not need a heater or 10+ gallons of water. I keep mine seperate. I have a beta in a bowl you can get at freakin Walmart with rocks on the bottom and have two goldfish in another bowl with rocks. It's a gallon bowl. I'd keep them seperate. Goldfish eat anything and I've had mine for over 3 years.
