Can I put clams in my goldfish tank?

What Else Can I Put In The Bottom Of A Goldfish Tank Apart From Rocks?

  • What Else Can I Put In The Bottom Of A Goldfish Tank Apart From Rocks? I was in the pet store the other day and saw that prices for the pebbly-rock things at the bottom of the tank are fairly pricey. I also saw that there were some ammonia absorbing rocks. So i have 2 questions really 1- Can i use only the ammonia absorbing rocks in my tank or should i mix it with some proper rocks? 2- What else can you use at the bottom of a fish tank other then rocks? Thanks Dana xoxo

  • Answer:

Those ammonia absorbing ones are made to be added to your filter. I do not suggest using them at all, since your beneficial bacteria need ammonia to thrive, and depleting it all with the use of ammonia absorbing rocks would be unwise. Partial water changes are the better way to control the levels of dissolved pollutants. You can use sand as a bottom, glass beads, or just leave it bare. Any garden rocks sold at gardening stores will do, so long as you clean them as your would any other substrate. It's really up to you. Be wary of calcareous rocks, which can raise your pH, or metallic rocks, which should not be added at all.

1. Never heard of ammonia absorbing rocks... I wouldn't try it myself. 2. You can use sand, different sized gravel, flourite, argonite, etc. Sand looks really good, but can be difficult to clean at times. Flourite and argonite are expensive, and are really only good for a planted tank, which you definitely don't want to do, because goldfish are cold water, and most plants you buy at the pet store are for tropical tanks. So for you I would go with either gravel of sand, but beware that with sand you have to be careful cleaning it, or else you'll end up sucking a lot of it up with your gravel vac (which I assume you have).

pebbles and huterrylemz, very pretty

courtney :p

You could always go to a thrift store or a budget store and pick up some large pond pebbles or some small rocksfor just a few dolars. I bought a bag of plastic sea creatures for mine and it was ohk. Anything that you can find like that should be fine. I live in Australia so the prices and supplies may be different if you live any where else. I havent seen ammonia rocks before so i dont know. Ask at the pet store what the best way to go is. hope i hepled xoxo
