The oestrogen level gives the shoal an estimate of the male to female ratio and some fish will change their sex if there is a big imbalance of numbers. Unfortunately there is a lot of man made oestrogen in many breeding rivers and it is causing the fish problems as they are changing sex when they shouldn't.
