Answer:
Goldfish are not an option. For one, they are cold water, and bettas are tropical. They also produce an insane amount of waste and grow quite large. Goldfish in general are not good unless you have a huge tank AND are diligent with the cleanings. Guppies are schooling fish - they need to be kept in groups of at least 6. Some people have had success with bettas and guppies, others have not. It depends on your betta's personality. I've never tried it. I've kept bettas with shrimp, snails, frogs, neons, and corydoras on different occasions without any trouble. Keep in mind that my tank was always big enough. Whether or not your betta can even HAVE a friend is dependent on the tank size. He should be in a five gallon (at least) filtered, cycled and heated tank. If this is the case, then you can keep him with a snail or some shrimp. That's it. Bettas won't get lonely if you spend time with it. They are pretty smart for fish - they will recognize you. I've even trained my betta a little. : ) He is more than fine on his own. ALWAYS research your new pets diligently before buying them.

A goldfish is a bad idea. They produce a LOT of waste and need 30 gallons of water PER fish. A Guppy is also a bad idea as their finnage and coloring can match a Betta's so it might make the Betta aggressive towards the Guppy. And Guppies like to be in groups of a least three. You should have a filter and heater with your Betta as it will keep in healthier. The best tank mates for a Betta (in my opinion) are: Mystery Snails (can be in a 5 gallon tank) Nerita/Nerite Snails (can be in a 5 gallon tank) Ghost Shrimp (do best in a 10 gallon tank) Red Cherry Shrimp (do best in a 10 gallon tank) Bamboo Shrimp (need a 20 gallon tank) Cory Catfish (do best in a 30 gallon tank, but I've kept Pygmy and Albino ones in a 10 gallon) Need groups of 3 Black Kuhli Loach (can be kept in a 10-20 gallon tank as they are very thin/skinny) Need groups of 3 African Dwarf Frogs (need a 10 gallon tank) Need groups of 3

Betta's can live peacefully with other non-aggressive community fish. However, Betta's like warm water temperature (between 76 and 85 degrees Farenheit) so you would need to put the Betta in with other tropical fish, ideally in nothing smaller than a 10 gallon tank. Also, female Betta's can live peacefully together as long as they have ample room. Female Betta's do follow a hierarchy so some initial "pecking" is normal. However, when putting female Betta's together, you want at least 3 or more.

two Betta's can be put together if they are females, and no gold fish or guppies, because of the guppies colorful tail your betta will mistake it for another betta and attack same thing with the goldfish. i would suggest and african dwarf frog (adf) adfs usually are in groups of 2 or three so i would get two or three its one frog per gallon. the great thing about them is they don't require much care and they need the same things as your Betta they eat blood worms and brine shrimp but since they will take a little while to realize there is food on the surface your betta will probably eat them all i would suggest frog and tadpole bites from petco. they need to be kept at 72f-82f. the food that i suggested is sinking food since adfs are bottom dwellers they are algae eaters and bottom feeders they don't need an air pump so they are exactly like a betta only smaller and cuter.

Betta are solitary fish. They don't get lonely and usually do best on their own. Goldfish aren't compatible, since they're not even a tropical fish. If you must have tankmates, I'd suggest Corydoras or Dwarf Frogs. Make sure you get a ten gallon tank too.

betta is called killer fish if u keep it with any small fish the small fish will die if with bigger then betta die b/c it alws keep fighting with other fish so keep betta alone

Yes you can keep another fish with a betta. BUT the only ones i would recommend are algae eaters and other bottom feeders PRETTY fish with flowing fins remind Betta's of other Betta's and they will fight. A goldfish produces large amount's of nitrate that other fish are not use to so goldfish should only be kept with other goldfish. A guppies has delicate fins just like a betta and your betta will probably act territorially to it.Not all betta's are the same but there is always a risk. Hope this helps
June probably has the best answer here and its the only true one, in my opinion. I'll add to her list by saying that most Tetra species can work well with Bettas, provided they are in a good sized shoal. Harlequin Rasboras also make great tank mates for Bettas. They are very peaceful, low waste shoaling fish and I've always had success mixing Harlequins with Bettas. I've also had success keeping Peppered/Albino Corys with them. But goldfish can't be kept with Bettas (diff temperature requirement). Guppies are a hit or miss and most people don't recommend them, especially in small tanks. Bettas can confuse guppies for a rival. And by the way, don't keep female Bettas with males. They can only be housed together for 48 hours max if they are spawning. If you want to keep females only, you need a minimum of three, ideally a minimum of five. 2 wont do.

there are many fish that are compatible as betta tankmates. The four rules that you can use to determine whether a fish is compatible are 1) Not colorful or resemble a rival betta's colors (guppies) 2) Not a fin nipper (Tiger barbs are a big NO) 3) The right size for the size of the tank (No common plecos in a 10 gallon tank since they get to 2 feet in length) 4) Lives roughly in the same water conditions as a betta (no brackish/saltwater fish) more info here http://bettacare101.com/tankmates

i wouldn't put any fish with a betta because: -because of their elaborate tails, some fish may take nips at the bettas tail and fins. - they're a tropical fish, so goldfish would probably not be very good - They are probably happier by themselves, simply because they are a solitary fish and may become aggressive to some other fish that resemble other betta fish.
