  • Answer:

    1. A mini cycle is when you get readings for either ammonia or nitrite in a previously cycled tank 2. It happens because some (but not all) of the bacteria have been killed off, leaving an insufficient number of bacteria to deal with the bio load of the fish. That could be as simple as topping up the tank without adding enough dechloronator to treat all of the replacement water during a water change, moving media from one tank to a completely different tank (with completely different water chemistry), leaving the filter switched off for more than an hour, or being too vigorous when rinsing media. Technically, adding too many fish to the tank at the same time would also force the filter to play catch-up, leading to ammonia and/or nitrite spikes. 3. Test the water - you'll get either an ammonia or nitrite reading if the tank is in mini-cycle mode. 4. Mini cycles can be over in a matter of days, depending on the amount of die-back. The fish may be listless and start hanging by the filter/air pump or at the surface and depending on the toxicity level and exposure time, you may find hemorrhagic septicaemia (blood streaks in fins/body), inky black patches, hypoxia (gasping) and possibly secondary infection. If ammonia and nitrite levels are low and the fish are only exposed to the toxins for a couple of days or so, you may see no symptoms at all apart from the listlessness. 5. Same as you would if you were putting the fish through a full cycle - reduce feeding to once every other day, test their water daily and carry out daily water changes until ammonia and nitrite read 0ppm.

It is when the bio-load in your tank increases/decreases. If you add or remove any number of fish, the load on your tank will change accordingly. If you are not adding too many at once ( and not overstocking your tank) then don't worry, the cycle will balance itself out. If you are removing fish, don't worry either. The only real way to determine any levels is with a test kit. Test ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. If you add too many fish at one time, you can get an ammonia spike. If you tank is overstocked or your filtration is not adequate, then your fish can die from the toxins.

1. A mini cycle is when your tank has the beneficial bacteria but not enough to keep up with the amount of waste your fish are producing so your cycle does a mini cycle to build up more bacteria fast. 2. This normally happens if you add too many fish at one time, Or you killed off some bacteria with medications, OR you put in all new filter media at one time. 3. You can't stop it you can prevent it. Stock your tank slowly. Maintain the filter properly, Don't over medicate if it is not needed. If you do have a mini cycle happen all you can do is check your water everyday do water changes everyday to bring the levels in to safe rang do this till the bacteria colony has grown large enough and everything goes back to normal. It tanks a week normally. 4. They fish become stressed when this happens and that stress can weaken them allowing for infections to effect them. OR if the levels get too high with out you changing the water they can get ammonia burn or even die. 5. Water changes is all you can do to help your fish. Change the water everyday so the levels never get out of control. They should be fine.
