Can I put some of my goldfish water and gravel into my betta's tank?
-
So I just realized that my betta fish is probably not doing well because of ammonia levels in the water. The ammonia is dangerously high. I have a fully cycled goldfish tank. Would it be beneficial to try to move some of the water/gravel over from my goldfish tank into the betta tank, or would that just kill my fish faster (or make it sick)?

Answer:
The gravel should help cycle the betta tank. The water won't. The water from the goldfish tank will contain nitrate and other pollutants from the goldfish, but very little of the beneficial bacteria. The kind of bacteria you want to cultivate adhere to surfaces, like gravel and the filter media. So I would use gravel from the cycled tank (only that gravel, if possible), but fresh (dechlorinated) tap water, in the betta tank.

No, the Goldfish water doesn't have beneficial bacteria in it, the bacteria only grows on surfaces in the water. The gravel may help if it's not dirty from the Goldfish. Doing 40% water changes everyday until your ammonia levels are safe would help more.
It wont make a huge amount of difference i would do 50% water changes daily that half's the Toxic ammonia in his tank

No. Goldfish are extremely dirty, and Bettas aren't immune to their diseases. Get fresh gravel, fresh water (dechlorinated, of course), add pH balance and ammonia neutralizers. You can find all these things at PetsMart.

not the water or the gravel, but some dirty filter materials from the other filter would be helpful and will hurry the cycle along a bit. do a partial water change right away before putting in the dirty filter materials, and reduce your feeding until the betta tank finishes cycling. (do the water change first to reduce the ammonia level) note, although there are bacteria in the water and on the gravel, the majority live on the filter materials and that's where they grow best and clean the water best. If you can't use the filter materials, then yes, a little gravel may be helpful.
