Would this community tank work?

What size tank would work for a 'community' tank?

  • I don't want a huge tank but one that can handle 10-15 different types of freshwater fish/invertebrates. I don't have a real huge space to use either. The types of fish/invertebrates I'm considering are: shrimp, flag fish, rasbora, and platys. Those are just an example. Basically what I want is a tank with different types of beautiful, colorful fish. I want more than 10 gallons but under I guess 30. What size would work? Thanks for the help. *^*^*^*^* THEY WOULD ONLY BE PETS AND WHAT TYPE I GET I HAVEN'T DECIDED YET. *^*^*^*^*

  • Answer:

All can go into the community tank 30 gallon and off the top of my head..: otos corycats spotted/green/emerald/panda/pygmy/albino… guppies cherry red shrimp Tiger shrimp amano shrimp bamboo shrimp crystal red/ crystal black shrimp wild type neos shrimp certain dwarf crayfish or even the self reproducing one platies neon tetras cardinal tetras celestial pearl danios assassin snails mystery snails These likely will be free and usually pop up in tanks when you don't even want them via accidentally scooping them up when catching fish or eggs on plants: pond snails/tadpole snails ramshorn snails malaysian trumpeter snails ("'\(o.o)/"')

One important thing, most small species of fish are schooling. Just keeping one or two doesn't work well. You want them in groups of around 6 or more. Then work on the idea that for small fish you need about a gallon for each fish. This ONLY works for small peacefull fish. Anything larger, allow more space. So while a 30gal tank could hold 30 small fish easily enough I would suggest sticking to maybe 5 types, but getting a decent number of each. Always get the biggest tank you can. You can allways keep a few small fish in a large tank, you cant keep lots of large fish in a small tank. Ian

Well if you want 10 - 15 different types you will probably want something bigger than 30 gallons you should get mollies or platys. They are hardy fish. Start off with less then add on what you have when you get better with your fish then add to them. Some people say that getting one type of fish and seeing them grow is good but I don't think so. If you intend to keep around 15 small sizes fishes, you would need a minimum of 45 gallons. A 30 gallon tank will probably okay, provide you do water changes at least once every three days and a superior filtration system. -rds

Lanab is right on. Most community tropical do best in groups of 6 or more. There are different breeds of mollies that will mix and give you something a little different, but for the most part, you want at least 6 of each fish. Another thought is that mollies, platties, guppies and some others I may be forgetting about are live bearers. If you get these fish, keep no less than 2 females for every male.

The basic tank for a community is a 24x12x15" and will hold 15 gallons of water and would be big enough for small fish of about a inch big and can total 15. If you have enough room for a bigger tank then the next size up would be 36x12x15" which will hold 23 gallons of water and still be able to keep 15 fish that are 2 inches big. If you still have enough room then the best size will be 48x12x15" and will hold 30 gallons of water and you would be able to keep fish up to 3 inches totalling 15-20 also invertebrates. I would not try to get any bigger than that.
