If I get a sucker fish, will my betta fight with it?

Do you think its good to fight your male betta fish?

  • like, as a stimulating thing just put them in the same tank as another and let them circle eachother a few times and lunge at eachother and when they actually start hurting eachother, take them out i myself dont own a male betta, i own a single female one, but i was watching a video where a girl did this, and i thought theres no harm in it, and its actually kinda good, so they can do something other than swim around. so basically like let them encircle eachother, nip a few times, and then take the other out before things get too serious, and neither fish gets hurt what is your opinion on that?

  • Answer:

Bettas do not have to "relieve aggression" to keep healthy because they are not aggressive fish. Bettas are territorial. They are happy when left on their own, so the presence of another male is a source of stress, which is why they take action to scare that other betta off. "when they actually start hurting eachother, take them out" So what you are saying is that you would wait until your bettas have sustained physical damage before removing them from the situation? A nip can become infected and lead to their death. It would be unnecessary, cruel, and just plain stupid. Give your betta an enriched environment. You could purchase flightless fruit flies and place a few in his tank to provide stimulation. In the wild bettas eat insects that settle on the surface of the water.

i think this is one of the stupidest questions ive ever read and you owe me 1 minute of my life back

How would you like it if your parents threw you in a boxing ring with your worst enemy, throw a few punches and stop. That's what i thought!!!

Ginitro

Adding to Ginitro's response, the fish know what they're doing--you don't. They could do a lot more harm to each other than you'd think, and before you'd know it was getting serious. They'll tear up each others' fins...and maybe more. What if that first "nip" hits the gills? You wouldn't be able to separate them without hurting the victim. That "stimulus" exercise could do far more harm than good. Let them get their stimulus from attacking their reflections, or put them in tanks next to each other and watch them do their macho thing, flaring and such.

Absolutely not. No, they won't KILL each other in a short fight, but you'll end up with injured fish. Injured fish can easily come down with bacterial or fungal diseases from even the smallest injury. So no, it's not good. You end up with fish that need extra care and expensive medicines due to your own stupidity. They get the stimulation they need from a quick look at a mirror. That's all they really need. Fighting them is simply for the amusement of idiot human beings with a sick sense of humor.

iYuuki

If you didn't know, in the wild they fight to the death and they hardly ever see one another either. It is NEVER ever a good idea to put two males in the same tank together for fighting. Please research fish more. A video of someone doing something that wasn't that smart is not an educator.

Jessica M

No. It would be too stressful for them and they can injure each other really quickly. They are too territorial and not only would the fighting be stressful but moving them around all the time, and injuries wouldn't make for a healthy happy fish.

Whiskers

no, that's like asking, do you like your betta to get stressed out and get hurt? actually, putting a mirror up against his tank is better, it excersizes them.

While i think it would be cool to see, It may not leave lasting physical damage, it can cause stress which in some cases is far worse because stress suppresses the immune system which makes your fish more likely to get sick from something :\

Baile

it will stress the fish out.
