What's the difference between a mineral and a rock?

What makes a rock safe for a tank? whats the difference between a rock you find and ones they sell at a store?

  • Answer:

I use rocks I have found outside. I make sure they are not porous and a smooth. I wash them with a mild dish soap and rinse very well. Then I boil them for 15-20 minutes. I wash them again in clear water. I have done this several times over the years and I have not had any bad reactions. I have some in one of my current tanks now.

what makes a rock safe is sterility. a rock you find may not be sterile and may infect the tank water with bacteria. the rocks sold at stores have been sanitized and carry no germs. if you find a rock outside you would like in your aquarium, sanitize it by rinsing it with soap and water, or pouring alcohol on it, boiling it, and then rinsing it again before putting it in your tank. make sure said rock is non-porous, or it may retain soap/alcohol and kill your fish.

Lol

Nothing, the guy who said they are sanitized is full of BS. Just rinse them really well with warm water.
