What to put in my 10 gallon tank?

Any advice on what type and how many fish to put in my new 10 gallon hextgon tank?

  • Hi, I am seting up a new 10 gallon hextagon tank in my office, thats the tall diamond shape tank. I am planning to put fresh water fish in I'd like to hear an opion on what type of fish to put in , I have a regular 10 gallon tank at home with three bala shark fish, The pet shops call it tri color shark, and I think they need more of a long span to swim, I know it can use a bigger tank but I find them to be a strong fish and they last longer then any other fish I had in a 10 gallon tank. I find it interesting that the stores call the tiger barbs semi aggresives , I found them to be aggresive even to there own kind. and the same gose for the kissing gauramees. I would like to hear opions on what type of fish dose well in a tall 10 gallon tank and how many fish would you put??? thank please email me at [email protected]

  • Answer:

Bala sharks NEED 70 gallons PER fish. They get 13 inches and they do not grow to the size of their tank. They also do better in groups of 5 or more. Hexagon tanks suck. Specially 10 gallon ones. Fish swim horizontally, NOT vertically. That being said the only fish that would be ok in a 10 hex are maybe 5 or 6 fish that dont get larger then 2 inches. Maybe a small school of neons or cardinal tetras or white cloud mountain minnows and a single male betta. Maybe add some live plants and ghost shrimp.

Mountain Minnows are great for a tank that size.. you could put in about 10 of them in a 10 gallon, a few more if you have it planted. I also like to put tetras in smaller tanks.. they're not quite as aggressive as barbs, and look fantastic. Depending on the sizes you could probably have 10-15 tetras of varying breeds without a problem.

Well, it depends, if you want a saltwater tank or not. If so, I advise you to get some neat-looking clown fish. They are beautiful and teeny so you could put more in a 10 gallon tank. If you want a fresh water tank, then I would put anything small in there because the bigger the tank the bigger the fish will get. Whatever you decide on, make sure you get at least two of every kind of fish you buy. Also, make sure you don't put aggressive fish in with non-aggressive fish, it won't be pretty. Putting places to hide (like castles) and fake grass will reduce stress for the fish. You are only supposed to feed your fish 1 flake of food per fish, every other day. This will keep your tank clean. Hope you like your new fish friends.
