How fast does moss grow?

How to grow Java Moss?

  • I have two breeding tanks at about 7 gallons. In one tank, I have a sword plant (It grew lots of leaves but never got big), water wisteria and some wild grassy plant I found growing in a river that also had loads of wild two spot gourami. In the other I have water wisteria, temple plant, a small bacopa that is growing extreamely slowly, a sword plant and some java moss. The moss is hardly growing, it has been three months already and it hasn't grown at all. In fact most of it is dead. Initialy it was tied to a wad of sponge. But last week, I took it out, got rid of the dead parts as much as I can and spread it out all over the tank. There was still bits of dead pieces but the trumpet snails took care of those. Now the dark green parts are remaining. The water ph is 6.5, the wpg is 1.5 but the plants get lots of light each day as they face the window facing the east and sunset is around 7.30 around here. The temperature is 26 degrees. Anything else I should do to help them grow? I have a sandy substrate.

  • Answer:

Just using your window as a light source is not enough - for java moss to really thrive it needs a good, strong light source. Your best bet would be to invest in an aquarium light (your other plants will grow more too) or find a different kind of plant to grow (one that doesnt require as much light as java moss)
