What do betta fish eggs look like?

My betta fish keeps eating his eggs?

  • I bred my two betta fish, and as soon as the female laid her eggs, I took her out and put her into another tank. The male scooped the eggs up and put them into his bubble nest, but I think he keeps eating the eggs, or killing them, because they never hatch. This has happened once before, and I don't know what to do.

It is common that some male bettas will eat eggs from the bubble nest. Are you feeding the male while he is in the tank with the eggs? Some breeders believe that feeding him while he is guarding the nest will bring his sense of appetite back and he will start snacking on the eggs. Try to condition the male well before breeding the two, giving him a larger quantity of food at feeding time. Bettas can survive just fine for several days without food. Also keep in mind that males will eat any eggs that have defects or malformations, or are unfertilized. If he is simply bulldozing through the nest and eating them all, though, you should try removing the male at the first sign of snacking and raise the fry without the father. This problem in males is not fixable and he will most likely do this every time you breed him, so you may want to consider breeding a different male.
