  Not exactly sure why you'd want to do this but it's easy enough , and the results work great. There are two versions you could make, a sponge filter or a box filter. Really this is more than a posting here, but here goes. To make a sponge filter, which provides GREAT biological filteration you'll need some rigid tubing, 1/2 inch and the airline size. You'll also need a couple 1/2 inch elbows, some sponge and a drill. The sponge you'll need can not be the sort you buy at the grocery store or Target for cleaning. Those sponges are treated with chemicals that will kill your fish. The Fish store might have some sponge material or you can go to the hardware store, look for open cell foam. About a 4 to 6 inch bloc will do. Drill some small holes all the way around a 3 inch piece of the 1/2 inch rigid tubing, the more the better. Cut the end so it comes to a sharp point. Push the tube into to the middle of the foam leaving about a 1/4 inch stickin out. Attach an elbow to the end and then another length of rigid 1/2 inch tubing for the uplift tube. Make long enough to come near the top of the tank but still be sumberged. If you want to get fancy you can use a 5/8 piece on top to create an adjustiable version. Drill a small hole, just large enough to pass rigid airline tubing through, in an elbow joint. Align the hole so the smaller tubing can go straight through the hole. Attach the elbow to the top of the uplift so you can pass the airline tube down to the bottom elbow. Attach flexible airline to the top and you've got a home made sponge filter. For a box filter, use a disposable tupperware box like glad makes. Taller is better than short. You'll need the tops of two boxes to do this. Place to 1/2 inch pieces of tubing on opposite each other in the bottom of the box. Use silicon sealent to secure them to the sides. Carefully cut one of the tops to a size that sungly will fit in the bottom on the container, on top of the spacers that you've just glued down. Cut many slots in the bottom of the box. Make them big enough that water will easily flow through but not fish. Make sure that all the slots are BELOW the level of the top you've placed in the box. Cut additional slots, again more is better, into the top you''ve placed down. These have to be small enough that your filter media won't fall through. Take the second top and cut a 1/4 inch diameter hole in it, place it on the top of the box and fasten it down. Take a piece of 1/4 inch tubing and insert it to where it sits on the barrier at the bottom of the box. Mark the line where it passes the top of the box and pull it out. Seal the end with a cap and drill as many holes as you can up to the line where it would come out of the filter. Pull off the top and fill with some glass wool and charcol, put the uplift tube back in and seal the box. Put an air line down the tube and you have a home made box filter. Of course you can also buy both of these for under $7.00 at most fish stores. BUT if you want to make your own. These are very cheap and very effective.
