How do I pack for an airplane?

How do I pack my Betta to survive in an airplane?

  • I would like to bring my Betta home with me, and I was wondering how do I pack him?

  • Answer:

Don't feed him for two days prior to the trip. The possible fish waste in a small container will quickly pollute the water makind it less likely he will survive the trip. Get two fish bags from the pet store and double bag hin (I say two so you don't have to worry about one getting a leak). Put him in an insulated lunch bag and you should be fine. Here is a good article on transporting them http://articles.aaquaria.com/articles/7/1/Shipping-Fish A

I recently read in the newspaper that airlines are starting to ban bringing any liquid in any container on board (something to do with liquid explosives). You should contact your airline to make sure bringing your fish is ok. As for methods of transportation...the others here have better ideas than mine ;)

Wow lol, that's going to be tough! By the way, what kind of an aquarium is he in? Like how big an stuff, and if it's glass, especially thin glass, then there's no way you will be able to get him home alive. I don't know what to do. But if you really wanted to try something very hard, you could pack your tank in the suitcase, really well, and take a bag, that you fill with water, and stick him in there. You could change the water every sometimes, because you can get bottled water in the airplane, and then you could put some dechlorinater, but your probably wont need it, because it's clean. Your fish will need to get air though, so that I don't know what to do. Maybe jus bring a small plastic jar or something onboard to have him in, and just carry him... Wait, how long is your flight, hope it's not too long, but short is ok, because betta can breather from the air.. Good Luck!

OK. Take a gatorade bottle and clean it out well. The mouth of the bottle should be large enough to get your fishy friend in. Fill the bottle with the fish water as much as possible, leaving no air inside if possible. Remember not to drink it. You should be good to go from there, unless airport security thinks you are going to use the fish to dismantle or take over an airplane in mid-flight. I give that last scenario a 50% chance these days. Good luck.

being the Federal goverment banned all liquids on flights i guess you will have to give your fish up to a freind or relative. I cant even bring my contact fluid on the plane. Sorry

He'd survive in a bottle or jar for several days to a week if you don't feed him. That said they will not let you bring a container of liquid on a plane. Your best bet might be to triple bag him, and ups him over night in a small cooler packed with bubble wrap, or packing peanuts. Be sure that the bag has a lot of in addition to the water.

i read that you can bring a live fish on board just without the water. i think that would defeat the purpose of bringing the fish home loook into a shipping service that would fly the fish out to your home

I think it's illegal to transport liquid in hand luggage now. Betta fish can be mailed if you do it right. Pack the fish in a bag with enough water to cover him no matter how the bag tips. Knot it at the top and use an elastic band to secure that. Buy a heat pack and wrap the bagged fish in newspaper with the heat pack inside. This will keep him warm. Next seal it all up in a tub or a styrofoam box you have made. Make sure to pad it up so the bag doesnt slide around. Mail by overnight/nextday courier service. DO NOT TELL the post office it is a live adult fish. In the UK you can ship fish fry but not adults. I dont know what the rules are in US. Mark your parcel fragile etc so it is handled carefully.
