How do I get out of MyYahoo beta?

Will my Common Goldfish get along with a male Crowntail Beta?

  • I have an existing 10-gal aquarium with one lonely Common Goldfish (about 3" long) and I am considering giving it some company. Given the smallish accomodations, I don't want to get too many fish, or another fish that's very large. A friend recommended getting a beta, so I have a Male Crowntail Beta on order through my local pet store. I have another 3-gal tank which the Beta can live in if he and the Goldfish don't get along, and it is set up right next to the 10-gal. I was considering putting the Beta in the 3-gal for a couple of weeks before introducing him to the Goldfish so that they could interact through the glass: that way I see if the Beta flares at the Goldfish. Does anyone else have any experience putting these two types of fish together? Or, could anyone suggest a different roommate for my Goldfish? Thank you! :)

First, a 10 gallon is the bare minimum for one goldfish, and in my opinion cruel -- get a 20 -28 gallon and a second goldfish, and they will live 20 plus years and become gorgeous and adorable. Goldfish do better with other goldfish, and can only go with other goldfish, but your tank is too small for two goldfish, unless you upgrade in six months to a year as they grow. Bettas definitely don't go with goldfish -- they are warm water fish and have totally different needs. Plus, they will only grow to a fraction of the size a goldfish grows. PS, I keep my betta in a 10 gallon and he thrives, don't listen to that bunk about keeping them in tiny bowls. I will never understand why people believe meat market type petstores who are trying to sell their wares. Bettas only live in ponds during part of the year in the wild, and they can still jump to different ponds, etc., nothing should be in less than a 5 gallon unless you think it's OK for yourself to live your entire life in a bathroom. And plecos are very bad for goldfish, they will suck on and harm your goldfish's slime coat. PS, I agree with other commenters that bettas are fine with other fish -- BUT NOT GOLDFISH. Cories and dwarf frogs are good options.

It is not a good idea to put the two together as they each have different water requirements.

I had a friend who had a betta and a goldfish together and it did not last long. The betta ripped the fins off of the goldie. So, no, it is not a good idea idea to put them together, but facing tanks might cause some fun thru-the-glass drama. Enjoy.

I wouldnt put a goldfish in a 10g but you cant mix them unless you want your goldfish dead

I wouldn't recommend it. Beta fish are chinese fighting fish and do not get along with any fish at all, whether bigger or smaller.

the beta may eat it.... =/

I would not suggest that you do this. Betta fish are agressive and they are actually more comfortable in a smaller space. That is why they are in "betta bowls" in the pet stores. Bettas are territorial fish and feel more comfortable when they have a smaller territory to protect. Goldfish are coldwater fish and if you put a betta in a goldfish tank, the betta will be too cold. Water should always be at room temp for a betta. A good tankmate for your goldfish would probably be another goldfish. They come in many varieties so maybe try a calico or something. Same species, different appearance to add some variety to your tank. Good luck!

A few years ago I got a goldfish to keep my beta company. The beta was a fella, don't know about the goldie. That beta was not interested in company, and was determined to remain a solo act.Everytime the gold tried to swim up,that anti social beta swam at it then away as if to say-Get Outta My Face!-The poor goldfish died, and I suspect that beta.............
