If I get a sucker fish, will my betta fight with it?

Can A Betta Fish And A Algae Sucker Live Together?

  • Yes… I have ANOTHER Betta question =] So I have a ten gallon filtered tank that is separated by a divider and houses a male betta [Tommy] and his girlfriend [Tina] Friends have told me that sisters, cousins, moms, etc. have betas with algae suckers in the tank along with the betas and are fine [both fish]. Is it possible for them to get along? Will it kill the betta? Will the betta kill it? Can the betta get sick and if so… How? Can the algae eater get sick… And if so what do I do? These are questions that need to be answered. I want to put them in the tank so bad, but I don’t want to harm ANY of the fish. HELP!! -Tabitha

First off you need to be a bit more specific about the 'Algae eater'. There are many fish sold as that, and many aren't even related. Chinese Algae eater - NO, grow too big for a 10 gal tank and gets agressive. Siamese Algae Eater - maybe for a 10gal tank, should be OK with a betta Oto catfish - could live in a 10gal, peacefull and too fast for a betta to catch, need very good water conditions and live in group. Bristlenose or other small pleco, pushing it with a 10 gal tank, but can live fine with a betta Common or Sailfin pleco - NO WAY in a 10gal tank, they grow to a foot long or more. They could live fine with a beta, maybe in a 75g tank. Hillstream Loach - Likes cooler water and high current in the tank, not a good choice with a betta. Snail - good choice for a small Betta tank. So there are options, but dont just by some random 'Algae Eater' without doing some more research. Ian

No chinese algae eaters, they are agressive. A corydora or an oto cat should be fine. Either one can get sick from the other if the other is already sick. I recommend going to a tropical fish store with healthy fish to get yours, that way you aren't introducing an illness into your tank. If they get sick post the symptoms and someone will help you. Best of luck!

I use to have a beta one day i bought a gold fish. the next day the gold fish was dead and my beta was eating it. I don't know about algae suckers

Firstly please don't put in "algae eaters" and expect them to live off the algae in your tank alone. provide them with their own food such as blanched lettuce or sinking algae waffers. Secondly If anyone tells you a betta CAN'T live with anything else, they're wrong. A 3 cory catfish would be fine. They will not bother the betta. Your're betta should not bother them. Bettas can get sick. There illnesses, along with most other fish, is caused by poor water conditions. And the "algae eaters" can get sick the same way. The best thing to do is prevention.

Well I had a beta and a algae sucker fish together and they got along fine. You need to introduce them to eachother first. Leave one of them in a bag of water and the other in the tank and put the bag of water in the tank and see how they react. If either of them seem aggressive, you should probably hold up on that. But Mine got along just fine. So good luck. [:

Betta's cant live with other fish. Everytime i have put a betta in with other fish, it eventually kills them all:( Betta's are better left alone

They can get along. The betta will not kill it it will not kill the betta ick, most diseases fish have, just keep the tank clean and the filter going. Algae eaters can get ick also, just get some ick medicine, I have had no other trouble besides occasional ick when I first get a new fish Betta fish are territorial, but I find that algae fish do fine with them

Usually you don't want to mix any fish with bettas, unless it is a molly with the female. that is a very nice sized tank, but bettas can be very aggressive, and are well known for clipping other fish's fins. Usually it is all down hill from there and the algae eater would probably die from stress. Bettas are also known to tear Off their own fins if they get too stressed.

I dare not put another fish with my betta he even hates his reflection in the fish tank he's in. He puffs up his gills and flares his fins. Nope, if they can get insanely mad at their image they're most likely going to tare another fish apart. Please don't tempt your little betta into a fight it doesn't want

if you keep them in a tank say of 10 gallons then they will absolutely be fine in the same tank. Most people say you cant keep a betta with anything but thats not true. It only sees things with long tails and beautiful colors as a threat. A pleco or glass sucker will be fine.
