Would this community tank work?

Converting my freshwater tank into a saltwater tank? What are the basics that I would need? Tips?

  • Ok so I have a successful community freshwater tank. I work full time so but always aim to spend as much time as possible keeping the tank and fish in good condition. I have decided (as selfish as it seems) that I want something a bit more exciting and varied and would love to try a saltwater tank. My local pet shop has some stunning saltwater fish and accessories which I would love to have. I have plenty of money saved but I need to know - What are the basics I would need to convert the tank (accessories, medications etc) - How much harder is the upkeep of a saltwater tank - Would you say saltwater fish are more susceptible to illness/death or are they the same as freshwater - And If possible could you give me a basic step by step guide to convert the tank Any answers much appreciated, Cheers :)

  • Answer:

A marine fish tank is much harder to set up and maintain, the strength of the salt is paramount, and you might have difficulties in converting a tank from fresh to salt water. I tried to keep marine fish once, but even though I followed all the instructions, all that happened was that the fish all died within 5 days. costly given the cost of the marine fish. Go to a SPECIALIST shop and get information there, or look for info online. A pet shop is there to sell you the fish, and don't forget, if they have problems with them dying or getting disease, they just throw the dead and diseased one s out, and hope to sell the others before they succumb.

the previous use of the tank is non relevant,,,, clean it properly and let it dry,, and you start from scratch,,,research and get all the information you can,,, many start-up books and websites are available for the saltwater beginner ---the additional equipment is more expensive,, live rock, live sand, protien skimmer, additional filtration, powerheads for circulation, hygrometer, salt mix ---then there is the cost of marine specimens, if you shop around to local fish stores you will find reasonably priced specimens, as well as store owners that can assist you with information ---six years ago, when i started saltwater fishkeeping, i went to my local public library to see what they had available in regards to "how to" books,,, suprisingly a very good selection ---when you read ANY books, fresh or saltwater or hobby publications such as magazines you will see similarities pepeated over and over in each of them ,,, ---maintenance schedule ---partial water changes ---TEST your water parameters ---Don't overfeed your animals ---you can't get too much information, keep reading anything you can get, libraries can order in books for you that are not in their usual inventories ---as far as disease or parasites,,, my opinion ,,, salt water livetock are just as resistant and can be kept healthy when upkeep on their environment is provided ---be careful that you get compatable species when it is time for stocking your tank --- be patient while cycling your tank

hi there are not alot of difference between a freshwater and saltwater tank to be honest but heres a few things they need different they need marine salt a hydrometer to measure how much salt is in the tank live rock sand dont use gravel as alot of marine fish have no scales and can damages them selves and we all know marine fish are not cheap. but look up how to set up a marine tank saltwater tanks are a little harder to keep but not much well yes salt water fish are more suscepitale to illness as they are sea fish living in a tank so they need a lot of stuff which isnt cheap and if they dont have it can get ill. if you decided setup a marine tank do some research on the fish you want before you buy them to make sure the there right fish for your tank, and if they are compatable with the other fish you want here is a good site where you can do that www.animal-world.com you can buy marine tank setups with everything which may be easyier goodluck
