I'm going to buy a minimum 40 galleon tank, how many betas can I house in there?
-
considering that I will put a bunch of hiding places, fake and real plants? I mean how do they live together in the wild?!? I know they aren't exactly school fish, but female betas tolerate each other (some can be aggressive), but yeah, do you think I can house a male with a few females in a forty galleon tank? Maybe 75 galleon? I read online that an aqaurist was able to house to male betas in the same aquarium, but I don't remember how many galleons...

Answer:
They don't live together in the wild. Bettas (spelled with 2 t's) are solitary fish that only come together when they breed (spawn). One male, one female then the female leaves the male to tend the nest and raise the babies (fry) until they can go off on their own. A male betta (pronounced bet-tah, not bay-tah) stays in a territory in the wild that he protects from other males. That is why they fight. They are both aggressive about the area that they inhabit. Neither wants the other to have the area as a spawning site....so, they fight over it. In a 40 gallon (no e's in gallon) tank, you could keep around 3-4 males and a couple dozen females. You will need floating plants for the males to build their nests in and claim as breeding sites. 8

Fishexpert: That was really rude. And your name is ironic. If you really wanna pull it off go for the 75 gallons, and heavily plant it. The bettas will establish their "territories" and it should be fine. But honestly, for better success have less.... I wouldnt risk it btw. So if you have 2 in there.. they should be fine... if you have 4... fine... but if you get to the big crazy numbers like 30 or 40 then they will kill each other and stuff... it just gets riskier with the more bettas you have. you know?

I wouldnt put more than one fish inone tank. But as far as breeding them, i would just put one female and one male then take him out the following day.

regardless of the size of the tank, male bettas will fight and male bettas will stress or kill female bettas ... you may have seen or read about bettas being kept together but you can see or read anything on the internet ... "No, In my experience 2 males will fight until one of them is dead. If the tank is big enough for them both to establish territory and have a place to retreat to like 100-200 gallons the fish may be able to live together in one tank, fights will happen though and either of their lives will be in jeopardy near where their territory meets." bettas in the wild live in rice paddies and slow moving rivers ... a rice paddy can be over 100 gallons and LOTS of hiding places ... and it is also not possible to house males and females together ... you can have bettas but do some more research on how to care for them appropriately before you buy any fish or tank ...

maybe 2 or 3 if it's planted heavily in a 75. What you could do is divide up a 75 and keep 1 male in a section and a sorority in another section, something like that. Divide the tank as you like, with a minimum of 4-5 gallons per male and 10-15 gallons for a sorority of 5-7 females, then you could also have another divided section of the tank for community fish, might look odd to some, but sounds kind of neat to try.

it is definitely a hard thing to do, betas are pretty aggressive fish and territorial. If you buy other fish your Betta can be in harm of getting it's fin bitten/nipped off. I also find it harder to feed a Betta in such a big tank. I would keep a Betta fish in it's own 5-10 gallon tank. Males should flare once they see other males that shows they are healthy and the ones like petsmart are kept so close to each other they dont flare anymore, thats not good! Its not healthy for betas to flare too much then not flare anymore.

@ fish expert wow get a life iv seen alot of ur rude comments on here, no one needs @s$ holes like you treating us all like we are stupid, try getting some manners. yes u can put one male withe several females but the females might harass the males and henpeck him, if u are going to get a 40 gal w betas make sure it is very very heavily planted and u have several caves, think 4-6 caves. if u want to try different fish then betas try some 3-6 tiger barbs 3-5 cory catfish clown loaches are cool too just spice it up, try different fish but make sure u research ur fish and make sure there compatible hope this helps
