I need a new control/remote.

Do i need a new betta tank? new props?? anyway i can get by without buying new stuff when a fish dies??

  • i use to have a betta in a 1 gal tank [no filter] and he would be the most happy betta. and sometime ago he died from dropsy...so i threw the old tank out and got a new 1 gal tank [since i heard you shouldnt reuse the same tank] and got a new betta. i did however use the same graval and plant for props in the new bettas tank...and few days later he got DROPSY! and died.... so i was wondering if there was any product i can buy thatll KILL any bacteria in your tank...like a windex version for aquariums or something. i dont want to keep having to buy new tanks, gravel, and plants. i plan to buy a new betta with new gravel and a fake, soft plant BUT keep the tank i have now. is this a good idea? bad idea?? please help give suggestions...THNX!

You can keep the same tank and plants but scrub them well with aquarium salt as a cleaner and rinse very well (all you have to do is rinse the gravel well and you can re-use it). As far as I know there isn't a "safe" soap like product for aquariums. Bacteria is good in an aquarium as they break down fish waste and extra fish food. Bettas don't last long in tanks without a filter. It would be worth your while to buy a 2 or 5 gallon tank and a small "aquaclear" style filter. The betta will be happier and will swim around more than without a filter. If you choose to keep the 1gal tank, then you should change at least on third of the water once a week. Make sure the water you put in has been treated with chlorine/heavy metal remover first. Good luck.

Dropsy is usually caused by poor water conditions. If he died fairly quick, could've started before you bought it. Stop throwing out your tanks lol. Ideally, a 5 gallon filtered tank would be best IMO. But, 1 gallon is definitely better then a bowl. Just be sure to do frequent water changes, that size I would say 1/2 the water at least every 2-3 days. You're old gravel and plants should be fine, just rinse them well. Remember too, I've only ever seen 1 pet store actually changing those small bowls they keep bettas in. I'd say most stores probably let them sit in the same water for awhile, so the diseases may start before you get them.

Wash the tank out with hot water - no soap. You can actually place the gravel in a pot of boiling water and let it boil for 5 minutes, and the plant can be soaked in hot water and scrubbed. To be sure you can also add a little cure all (general medication for fish) to the water for the first week or two. Also do not overfeed. And of course any form of filtration will really help. If you cannot use a filter at least do regular water changes.
