How can I tell my betta fish is sick?

How can I tell if my betta fish is sleeping or resting, and not sick? What's normal betta behavior?

    Ignore them...Ur fish is not going to die!! Most Bettas are active and enjoy swimming around its habitat. Some take the more lazy approach to life and sit and squander for most of the day. That does not mean your fish is unhealthy or sick. As for keeping to surface...Bettas have a special respiratory organ that allows them to breath air directly from the surface. In fact they inherently must do so. It may be that perhaps there is simply not enough oxygen in the water and it needs to be changed. You may also want to consider getting a filter for its tank if possible and if you have not already done so. Keep an eye on your fishies eating habits. If your fish has stoped eating then you may have a problem on your hands. Bettas will reject food and starve them selves if they are unhappy or if something essential is missing from their daily life. However, if your fish is eating normally, you may just have a lazy fish, that has gotten use to its suroundings. You may want to try switching its tank up...adding new plants or changing the bowl. As long as he is eating fine, doesn't have any visible signs of disease and is acting normal most of the day then he is probably just resting. I have had 2 of them live up to 5 years, so just because he is 2 doesn't mean he is about to die.

I'd say you're doing well. I've never had a Beta last more than a year...sigh...

how old is your Beta? I had mine for almost 3 years! When they are sick they loose color. Beta don't do much unless you put a mirror in front of them. Only do it once! you will stress them out if you keep doing it.

your betta sounds like he's old and tired. he proble will live another good year or so. he will be ok. so young bettas will just sit for a little while on the surface of the water too. it could be the water temp. Bettas have a wide range of temps that they will live in, but the warmer the water(78-85 degress) they will be more active.

Well he will make a bubble nest when he is in the mood to breed, he must be working up to it.

Your betta will rest on rocks, plants, thermometers, and even the heater holder. (My older males seem to like the extra warmth.) This should only really be the case the majority of the time if they are bored, cold, or sick. My male bettas generally go into their feed me display when ever I come into the room. My females in the main tank are generally found swimming around, and rush the feeding corner if they see me. If your betta is lazying around all the time, and takes no interest in his surounding. It's a bad thing. If he doesn't react to a mirror things are pretty bad. PS- Note that if you've had him for 2 years he is 2.5-3 years old. Most betta live 3-5 years.

i had a betta he just went to the bottom and stoud there 4 a while then started swimming
