How often do female bettas have eggs?

Can u breed bettas so the eggs dont hatch or something?

  • i have a male and 4 females and the glass between the tanks is covered in algae i never clean just so they cant see each other . but wen i put hi in his clear cup and put him in the big tankfor a few mins he LOVES to see the girls, and he will follow them around as best he can while in his cup. this one girl who si the same breed as him loves to see him and gets excited to see him when i put int he cup. they play through the glass all of the 5 minutes. i cant and dont want to take care of betta babies, but i think they would be rlly happy to mate once. is it inhumane? wen she lays the eggs are the betta babies conscious?

  • Answer:

It's not inhumane in either case. Fish don't mate for fun like humans do, so it's not like you are teasing them or something. Also, them mating and you tossing the eggs is no more inhumane than eating a chicken egg since they are not aware or conscious at all. If you don;t plan to raise the babies, don't bother mating them because as CatX said, there is a good chance he would kill the female. Don't worry about giving the male something to do. He's probably happier strutting his stuff than anything else and all you would be giving him to do is potentially kill the female and at the very least beat her up badly which is the normal out come from betta breeding. I agree with Catx, Betta breeding is not a romantic thing. Once a female lays her eggs, the male chases her off and guards the bubble nest alone. If you have a small tank he can almost certainly kill her. And if she is not in the mood, a large female betta can grab a male's fins and rip them up. Clean the algae a bit between their tanks if you think they need a little view now and then but beyond that stick clear of putting them together.

Chances are the eggs wouldn't survive. So I guess you could breed them for fun. I have tried to breed mine to get babys but I have given up and I am going to get guppies.

Chances are he's more likely to kill the female, or the female kill him, than mate. Keep the male somewhere else, don't try and "breed" them and end up with two dead fish!
