Can I put clams in my goldfish tank?

I was going to put two goldfish in my new 10 gallon tank, but...?

  • people are still telling me that that is not enough room! I have one goldfish and right now it is in a little bowl and I change the water everyother day. My boyfriend just gave me a 10 gallon tank which I hope to have set up and in place by the end of the week. I have a coupon for a free goldfish which I was going to put in the tank also with my other goldfish, because I want them to play together and keep each other company. So now I don't know what, will the goldfish be lonely after being in a tank with so many fish at the pet store to coming back and being in my tank all by himself? Should I use that coupon to get him a free friend?

  • Answer:

It depends on how big your fish is. If he's small, you can get another small one and they'll be fine. Fish need 1 gallon per inch. The best thing is to go to the pet store and talk to one of their fish specialist. Tell them the size of your fish and tank and what else you want to get. Don't forget! If a fish has more room, it will grow more. I have a 10 gallon tank and had to give some of my fish away because there was too many. I now only have 2 decent sized goldfish and they are both doing well for now.

a least one gallon of water per goldfish

Sweetie a 10 gallon is more than enough space for only 2 goldfish. Fish i don't think have feelings just instincts so no worries on whether or not the fish will be lonely. I'm sure all will be well . But i do recommend when you get the new fish you keep it separate for a few days to make sure it's not bringing any disease to your tank.Just be sure to really look at your choices before picking one and take notice of the health of the other fish in the tank.

ok, here is the deal. when people are saying that 10 gal isn't enough space for a goldfish, they are refering an adult sized fully grown goldfish without having their growth stunted. basically a gold fish can grow extremely big b/c they are desendents of carp. if you put them in a pond w/o any growth restrictions, then they can get up to 12" or more. as for the fact that goldfish can stay in a bowl and grow only to the size of that bowl, that is a myth. yes, their growth will be hampered in a small bowl, and their bodies will remain stunted BUT their insides continue to grow. so if you would like to torture your goldfish to death, you can keep them inside a small tank until their insides grow too big and they die from internal hemorrhaging. the general rule of 1 gal per 1" of fish length is good BUT not for goldfish. why? b/c they are dirty greedy fish. by "greedy" i mean if you continuously feed them, they will not stop eating. by "dirty" i mean they poo ALOT. besides for eating, goldfish are usually pooing. what that means is their poop will produce a lot of ammonia (extremely poisoness to fish) faster than other fish thus causing them to basically poop themselves to death. so for goldfish, instead 1 gal per 1" of fish length it is better to have 1.5-2 gals per 1" of fish length for goldfish. goldfish are not as stupid and unfeeling like many would think. they are very sociable fish and very smart. mine recognize me and i am able to feed them from my hands. they are socialable and like to have company. so 2-3 goldfish is very good for their health b/c if they are stressed, they will be more prone to sickness and disease such as ick especially if they are in a small tank that doesn't have enough water to help maintain good water conditions. but 1 lone goldfish is not bad either, but it is more fun to watch 2-3 goldfish playing together. so for your situation, i'm assuming you currently have a small goldfish of 1-2 inches. you would need about 2 to 4 gals of water. i would recommend you getting another relatively same sized goldfish to keep the other company. if you get one that's much bigger or smaller, the bigger fish will bully the smaller one. i'm assuming the total length of fish will be around 3-4 ins, so you will need about 5-8 gals of water. once your fish grows bigger, around 3 inches each, you should look into getting a 20 gallon tank for them both to be in. if you have additional question about goldfish, you can either look at these sources below or contact me :D

go for it 10 gal tank you can get 6 // need air pump

Ender gave you pretty accurate information EXCEPT- in the ten gallon your two goldfish will not grow. They grow to the size of the tank based on a build of chemicals in the water. If you keep them crowded you will notice little growth spurts after water changes. Proffesionals suggest the ten gallons per goldie as baby fish. This is to keep them healthy and growing. As adults they need much more room, most hobbyist will give an adult fish up to 40 gallons per fish. If you put two fish in that tank they may grow to about 4" from nose to tip of tail. They should grow at least twice that size. 1 adult goldfish would not fit in a ten gallon. Imagine a fish with a body the size of a large orange and a 5" tail in your ten gallon tank. Fancy goldfish can weigh over ten pounds. If you are not ready for this kind of commitment then bring back your goldies and get something more appropriate for a ten gallon- community tropical. If you keep two fis in that tank they will die very young.

Goldfish will get as large as their container, I was fishing in a pond once and caught a goldfish about 18 inches long, what a surprise! A 10 gal tank is plenty big for two
