What do fish eat?

What can these fish eat other then fish food (for a healthier diet!)?

  • So I have these fish in my 55 gallon aquarium so far: 4 red platys, more to come (female pregnant) 6 scissortail rasboras 2 juvenile angelfish (Soon I'll have a pictus catfish, more platys, swordtails and a dwarf gourami or two). What can the fish I have now eat other then fish flakes, peas and lettuce, and brine shrimp? What can all of the fish (fish I have now and ones in the future) eat besides flakes, peas, lettuce and brine shrimp? Thanks!!!

  • Answer:

Firstly - Congrats on the pregnant fish :D Secondly - bloodworm is good for most of these types. And some will eat algae and parts off live plants

For the fry, live brine shrimp is good. So is this:http://www.hikariusa.com/products/tropical/first_bites.html All the fish will benefit from some frozen foods: http://www.hikariusa.com/products/bio-pure/index.html There is nothing wrong with flake foods, peas and lettuce may or may not be what you are looking for. There's plenty of good freeze dried foods out there too. http://www.hikariusa.com/products/bio-pure/indexFD.html Other foods besides Hikari are of good quality too. The water parameters for angels is very different than that of platies. You can, but I wouldn't mix them. The gouramis and angels will not be a major issue. The pictus is not the best choice for a 55, as it is a highly active fish and needs room. Add more angels so they can school. If you are lucky, you might even get a mating pair.

You shouldn't stock the gourami with the angels. That's going to create some territorial issues and nipping. Bloodworms, tubifex, daphnia and krill are all good freeze-dried options. In your frozen section, look for Formula 2. It a very good veggie based cube. Also, get a veggie clip if you don't already have one. Use sushi nori sheets clipped in your tank. Be sure that you only purchase regular flavor and not teriyaki or other flavors. Tear 1 inch strips and clip inside your tank. This is very similar to the seaweed salad you can purchase at pet shops, but much less expensive.

Tubefex worms are good - you just need to break up the cube. Also Freeze dried or even live blood worms are great for them. Feed as a treat though. Other than that - thats basically it for a healthy nutrition

some will eat yogurt and boiled egg yokes too. what you have listed though is a well rounded diet for your fish. Congrats on the soon to be baby platys.
