What types of exotic fish should I get?

What types of fish should I get?

  • I will be setting up a 5 gallon fish tank soon and im not sure what kind of fish would be best for me to have.

  • Answer:

A betta would be a good choice for a small tank. You could also keep a very few small tetras like neons, penguins, glolights, etc. A dwarf cory catfish wouldn't be out of place in a 5 gallon either. Lots of choices really, if you want to go out on a limb, try looking for a few killiefish, they are very very colorful and most are quite small. Keep your choices limited to quite small, docile fish and limit the number to just a few 6-8 maybe 10 depending on the fish and you'll do fine.

I believe that angelfish get entirely too big for a five gallon tank and I know that goldfish definitely do. Some possibilities for you in a tank that size are the following: 3-5 neon tetras 3-4 Male guppies (male only!) 1 male guppy and 1 female guppy (they will breed and you will have a tank full before you know it) To any of these you could add 2-3 amano shrimp or 3-4 red cherry shrimp (these are both algae eaters and if you get male and female red cherry they will reproduce in the tank without any additional help). Hope this helps, and just keep in mind that you have a small tank and can not get anything that will get large!

If you are not into high maintenance pets, then I suggest any fish that is not exotic. Ask the people at the pet store what fish will be best for your lifestyle. Exotic fish require more maintenance with water and food. Some of my favorite fish are the little neon fish (red and green) and the big puffy goldfish.

If it is a 5 gallon tank keep in mind the fish rule: for fresh water its 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water; for salt water its 1 inch of fish per 5 gallons of water. If you get an angle fish you can only have 1. They get pretty big. If you get small fish then you can have more, and your tank will be more colorful. Also remember that goldfish don't mix well with other fish, they are too dirty. Tetras are good, mollies and guppies are fun and colorful. Female betas are a blast and you can have more than one of them, but the males really have to be by themselves for the most part. Hope this helps, if you would like more info just e-mail me! Good luck!

Yes, angel fish are very beautiful and suitable for fish tanks. You should get a variety of different types and sizes of fish. Remember however, do a little research to make sure each type can be put in the same tank as another fish. Get a few goldfish, clown fish are cool too! Search "fish" on google images and check out their beautiful designs. It might help you choose based on the way they look. Good luck! =] Serena

Well for a freshwater tropical tank... you can have tiger barbs, gouramis, and shrimps(too delicate for beginners). In a five gallon that is.... although i might have missed more types of fishes.... For a freshwater coldwater tank.... you can have goldfishes, dojo loaches(my favorite), and the easy to breed in right conditions, Fathead minnow(don't be discouraged by the name). The fathead minnow and goldfishes(feeder goldfishes) are sold as bait fish or feeder fishes.... they are really cheap and easy to take care of... Dojo loaches are like eels but really cool with wonderful personality.... looks don't matter but the dojo isnt ugly though....

a good idea may be chiclids. Oscars or the such like that. they are reasonably hardy fish and could be a way to go. They are pretty agressive tho so you would want to make sure to put the right fish together so as not to cause problems. Any knowledgable person at the store could help with that. hope it helps a little. Remember that with a 5 gallon tank you wont be able to get many fish
