Beta Fish: Is it true that beta fish can jump out of a fish bowl?

  • I just read online that beta fish can jump out of a fish bowl, so the bowl or tank should be covered (of course the cover has to provide air). Is this true that beta fish can jump out of a fish bowl? I was just given a beta fish tonight with fish bowl (I think it's about 1 gallon), and I don't want to end up finding the beta on the floor. But I've never heard that beta fish can jump out of a fish bowl.

  • Answer:

yeppo! some people actually train their fish to jump out of the water for food. i believe they can naturally jump to get from one rice paddy to another, though i am not too sure if this is true. most fish can jump, whether there is a reason behind it or not. even fancy goldfish, though i have never had this problem. here is one video of what someone has taught their beta fish: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ijQXglW6pDE remember, if you think it is absolutely necessary that your beta must live in a bowl, it must be at LEAST three times it's total body legth. best of luck, hope this helped =]

Most fish if not all have the ability to jump out of the water. The reason being is poor water quality, wrong temperature, or stressed out from another fish and wants to get out. A one gallon cannot support a heater and a filter. Without a heater, the betta will be more prone to disease, dull colors, sluggish/lethargic. Bettas come from Thailand where is it hot and humid, a 1 gallon bowl is no where compared to that. ("'\(o.o)/"')

Yes they can jump out of the bowl!!! I never believe it until I saw it! The pet store told me the remedy is to not fill the bowl too close to the top, so they won't be able to clear the rim if they jump. In a bigger bowl, mine stopped jumping....he was so happy out of that horrible tiny bowl they sell them in. He was the coolest fish once he had more room. Some people say not to put them in a larger bowl, but my experience has been, they thrive in a larger rather than smaller bowl. just don't fill the water to the top... good luck

Yes the bettas are capable of jumping out of the water & will do so for unknown reasons. I would imagine poor water quality is one of them! But they can also get confused when their habitats are changed..like being in a plastic container for a while then being switched to a bigger bowl. Just cover it but leave a gap big enough for air but not big enough for the fish to jump through. Or just get a hooded tank!

Yes, a beta fish can jump out of its bowl. It is wise to place a cover with holes over the bowl so that the fish can not jump out of the bowl. If you don't have a lid make sure that the water isn't filled right to the top of the bowl because that makes it easier for the fish to jump out of the bowl. There are some plastic beta fish bowls that come with a cover attatched to the container with holes for air.

YES!!! I had many many many experiences with that problem... so you should really put a net over the fish bowl to keep it from jumping out....yeah. 'Cauze last time we had 5 fish. One disappeared. Then about 1 year later we were moving, so we put the fish tank in the car. Then we found the missing fish on the ground, all dried up and shrivled....THAT WAS NOT A VERY PRETTY SIGHT. Believe me...

Yep, They can also jump over tank barriers and attack other males if the lid is not on properly...thanks hubby. Bettas are very good jumpers, they jump from puddle to puddle in rice paddys in Thailand. You may like to upgrade to a heated, filtered 2.5 gallon or up tank. He will be happier.

Yes that is correct, there are some Jumpers LOL they can jump out the tank and also they bowl. you can put a special plastic cover over the bowl and it covers the sides and leave a small opening in the middle you can find them in most stores where sells fish and their supplies. good luck peace.
