How can I make an incubator for chicks for cheap?

Can chicks hatch from eggs bought from the grocery store?

  • Today my teacher just told my class that if we wanted to we could hatch chicks from eggs bought at the grocery store even if they've been in the fridge she said female chickens are asexual and can produce eggs by themselves and no male is needed for fertilization she even said when she when she was in coolege her and her friends put 26 eggs in a incubator (i have mine in a shoebox with a towl around them) she and her friends broke 1 egg ever day and soon she notced a streak of blood come out of 1 and on the 22 day she came to break a egg and their were 4 chickens their that had hatched she gave the chicks to a farmer would i be able to do this also can this happen also what would i do so i make sure the chicks are born

    Hi, Is it any wonder why children grow up thinking milk comes from a bottle, meat comes ready packed from the cow, or vegetables are grown in clear plastic bags! It makes me wonder where this so called teacher was taught at? telling young children this kind of nonsense! Your "teacher" is totally wrong in telling you this, and should be reported to the head of your school. You are just wasting time and money buying eggs from a store, they will not be fertile, as most if not all farmers do not need the use of a rooster.The hens lay infertile eggs. You will never hatch eggs in a shoe box in a million years, they need an incubator to grow and hatch.

No, your teacher is stupid. Chickens lay eggs regardless of whether or not they are fertilized, but an unfertilized egg will not hatch a chick. The eggs you buy at the store are not fertilized.

uhm. your teacher is full of crap. the eggs aren't fertilized and chickens aren't asexual and all that will happen is the eggs will rot. There was never a chick in there and never will be.

i think that perhaps you may have mis under stood - you CAN buy fertilized eggs at some stores, so you CAN hatch those. i hope thats wajahat happened - because what ur 'teacher' did , is nearby imposiblle( if they were unfertilized)

No, your teacher is wrong. The hen can produce the egg without the rooster, but you need the rooster to fertilize it for a chick to produce. Even if the egg was fertile you couldn't put it in the fridge!

Chickens always lay eggs, but they will not hatch unless they are fertilized by a male. Asexual means that they reproduce by themselves, and the offspring are genetically identical to the parent. Cells in your body reproduce asexually, along with most microorganisms. As far as I know, there are no animals that reproduce asexually.

Good grief. Where did that teacher attend college? Does she have a teaching certificate?I sure hope she isn't teaching biology. Perhaps at one time fertilized eggs were sold in stores as they came from farms and it is possible some eggs were fertile.Now hens are raised in isolation and have no access to roosters. Chickens are not asexual. They are male (roosters) or female (hens) The females mate with the roosters who fertilize the eggs. The fertile eggs are laid, incubated by the hens or incubator and Voila---chicks.

I think your teacher is fooling you eggs in the grocery store are infertile the hens are laying the eggs but no rooster so not fertilized. the usda will not allow fertilized to be sold. I have an idea, ask your teacher if the school has an incubator (most do), offer to bring 1 dozen store bought eggs to actually see it work, (ask mom if you can buy them first), If your teacher says no , ask do you want me to learn?
