How do I take care of my baby sparrow?

I found a baby sparrow and don't know what to do?

  • ok so this morning i heard my dogs barking at something and All the sparrows outside freaking out so i ran outside because i knew it meant that a baby sparrow flew out f its nest and fell to the floor. So i found the bird before my dogs managed to get a hold of it and it seemed fine to me. so ive been with it trying to keep it warm but i don't know what to feed it cause it is opening its mouth like its hungry. I want to put it back in its nest but i cant reach it and the mother of the bird is flying it outside nervous. the baby bird seems like it can get some lift off the ground because i locked up my dogs and put the bird on the grass so the mother bird can get to it but the baby cant fly up to its nest by itself. what do i do? I dont have any money to take care of it myself or take it to the vet so yea. and yes the mother bird will still feel it even though i touched it. i saw it so no need to say its too late for the bird to be put back.

  • Answer:

If you cannot reach the nest, then "make" a nest with some twigs, cotton, etc and put it and the baby bird in a basket with handle and tie the "nest" up as close as possible to the original nest location. The mother will still care for it and will likely find it by hearing it's begging calls. Birds do leave the nest before they can fly anyway..so there is NO reason to kill this bird as someone else suggested. Just because a baby bird has not yet learned to fly does not mean it should be killed! Also, you are right..it does not matter if you touched it..birds cannot smell well, so this is a complete old wives tale that they will abandon due to your scent. Also, if the bird is injured, you should take it to a wildlife rehab..it will cost you nothing..it is free, that is what these places exist for. We took a baby bird (quite large) that we found to our local nature center. They explained to us that it would more than likely die in captivity if they tried to get it to an adult and then would just have to dispose of it. Instead the asked if they could take it where the owls were and let them feed on it. That's what they did. Sad; but they were experts and wonderful people so if it was going to die either way at least the owl ate it.

hate to say it - but euthanize it humanely. sparrows are invasive from europe (assuming you're in the u.s.) and take away habitat from native bluebirds and other valued bird species.

get some wild bird feed and a bowl and water and a bird cage. i hope i helped.

black crappie

feed it with worms.. and little insects and try that his mom recognize his baby

use a ladder and try to place the "fledgeling" (meaning he is beginning to learn to fly) back in the nest safely. Sparrows are defensive parents and will protect and reaccept their offspring. If this is unable to be accomplished, try using a cage. Some birds eat insects, whilst others eat seeds. Try going to a local petstore and see what they would recommend for you trying to "rehabilitate" a wild bird or even google what you can possibly feed him. Until that time, try using some small mealworms to temporarily tide him over. I don't think his parents will mind if you return him fed. :) Best of luck...I agree with you not wanting to harm him or do anything to cause him harm. Nature is too precious a thing for us to destroy it with an innocent baby animal. GL
