What duck to choose?

  • i have read up on many many many breeds of ducks... but all the information blends...all the breeders email me that this duck or that duck is the best because they have had it and its nice. please, try to actually follow my guidelines and help me pick out a duck based on more than what the books say.... GUIDELINES -it must not be a bantam duck because the size is not beneficial to my lifestyle. -i am raising the D U C K S for no commercial reasons -i am not planning on showing my duck -the duck must not be aggressive because of children in the family, (14, 14, 8) <-- the eight year old would not participate as much as the other girls and parents. i have put thought into this and have read hundreds of pages on ducks. i know many of the breeds, cambell (sp), call, pekin, mallard, rouen, welsh harlequin...etc.. please tell me WHY. -

    The magpie is a fairly quiet breed. They are also intelligent and inquisitive. It's a fairly good bet as a pet duck. Other than that, the Welsh Harlequin is a great pet duck. It's calmer than most other breeds, and therefor easier to handle. The welsh harlequin was actually bred from the campbell line... so they are generally quiet and even tempered. Best of luck. (and I still prefer muscovies... ; ) ) Edit: if your dogs ignore birds as a general rule, they'll probably also ignore ducks, of any size. The most problems with birds occurs with hunting dogs, like beagles and retrievers, who just naturally WANT to chase birds.

I absolutely LOVE ducks, though my focus has been on wild ones. I'm afraid you are the only one who can answer this question since you are the one person who knows for sure what delights you. I am sure though, that whatever kind you choose, that will be one LUCKY duck!!! ALL the best!

Personally, rouens are my favorite. -Can be quite friendly if hand raised and handled a lot. -Cannot fly because they are too heavy, meaning you do not have to cut wings. Good luck with whichever breed you choose!!

Much will depend on how you plan on keeping a duck being mallards are fliers and may not stay in an open area.Another factor is how much interaction you are expecting with the duck most ducks are generally shy and will only come close when feed is offered.If you are intending a small aviary or coup type enclosure most any duck will do.If you plan on having them free ranging around then you should stick to the Pekings cambell or rouen also the crested ones.What you need to do is pick a duck that will compliment what your needs are.I don't know of any breed of duck that is aggressive so it is a basic take your pick.As for myself I'm looking at getting a pair of mandarins.
