What are the differences between Triton, greater Sulphur, and blue-eyed Cockatoos?

Are sulphur crested cockatoos good with children?

  • i had a sulphur for 6 years as a teenager and would like another one but have a 3 yr old and a 5 year old. we already have 2 dogs rats and cockatiels which are fine with the kids but wanna know if anyone has had any major dramas with kids and cockatoos?

    No, cockatoos are not good with kids. They bond to one person and see all others as a threat to their person. They will bite the kids. We had one too that HATED children and would jump of the perch and attack them. Thats a bit extreme of an example. Here's a description taken from mytoos.com "Then there's your CHILDREN.... Cockatoos normally don't like small children. I have seen otherwise "normal" cockatoos attack small children for no reason. Is it because the children are fast or flighty? Is it their voice or mannerisms? I don't know the answer to this. All I know is that even if your cockatoo (or any parrot) is nice to your kids, NEVER EVER allow them near your kids faces without complete supervision, and even then you are taking a chance. Plastic surgery is not something you want to put your child through ! Its your call."

No they are not good with kids, its too dangerous their beaks can take a finger clean off. We have an adult male M2 hes wonderful and will be sweet to kids but as sweet as he is I wouldnt trust him and the situations a child could put him into. if your wanting to get a bird and im all for that you may want to consider a smaller one such as a cockatiel. those make great pets and would be much easier for a child to manage and make friends with.

A cockatoo needs, and needs and needs. Cockatoo = major drama. They are NOT good with children. You must remember what made your bird happy - Attention. You are way to busy for a cockatoo. Take care of your kids, cockateils, rats and dogs and be happy.

i used to own one too,they're beautiful,they do need to be handled correctly though,i would not suggest having one around kids so young,this would be madness!! kids being kids do not know the bird's temperament,kids being kids want to play too,if you are going to get one,do not leave kids so young unsupervised around this type of parrot(not saying you would,just advising).

If you are dead set on a cckatoo, then wait until your youngest child is at least twelve. In the meantime, check out http://mytoos.com . I will never own one after reading this site. Ultimately, though, it's your decision.

A better question would be: Are children good for Sulphur Crested Cockatoos? At that age, I would think not.

No those birds are good with an orange sauce, like is typically used on duck.
