What's a good cockatiel cage?

Cockatiel lays eggs all over the place?

  • Hi, My little girl cockatiel is laying eggs for the second time in her life. The first time she was 9 months old and only laid 3 eggs which she seemed to have no clue what the heck they were. This time she is a year old, seems to know whats going on, but doesn't lay her eggs in the same spot. The first egg in this clutch she laid when my husband was laying on the bed. If one of us are home then the cage is open and she and her cagemate who is also female are free to fly out and around the house, although they usually stick to the room we are in. She forced herself under his arms and laid the egg. The second one she did the same thing so during the day we kept the eggs on the bed where she would come out and sit on them and protect them, which also included attempting to murder me if I got too close. She didn't care if I touched them or moved them or even sat on the bed, however while she was playing mommy I couldnt go near. Anyway so by the time the third came she had grown bored of the first two, she stopped laying on them and stopped trying to slit open my throat. We thought she was done but no she laid a third while sitting on the back of my husbands chair so it just dropped to the floor and she never even looked for it. Since she kind of lost interested we followed their vets advice and my husband showed her that he was moving them to the cage and she smelled them and tapped them and then left them alone once again forgetting about them. She laid the fourth one while sitting on a perch luckily not breaking it and again didn't even look at it. So... what do you do when your cockatiel lays eggs without an actual nest or specific place that she lays. She did the same thing last time all three eggs were in completely different spots. Does she just not care anymore or what? Obviously the eggs are infertile and she thinks my husband is her mate and I dont know why.

  • Answer:

Don't dispose of the eggs until she looses intrest in them. Disposing of them immediately as one poster suggested will promote chronic egg laying as tiels will continue to lay until they have a full clutch. To stop her egg laying don't allow her to have access to enclosed, dark spaces ie bird tents, nest boxes etc. Limit the amount of light she is getting a day to 12 hrs or less covering the cage if needed. The amount of light, availability of fresh foods and suitable nesting sights are typically what promote mating and egg laying in tiels. Make sure to provide her with plenty of calcium so she does not become egg bound. Don't buy a male and allow her to breed simply because she is laying eggs. There is no reason to produce chicks for the sake of producing them especially from a female that is a chronic egg layer

It's not that she doesn't care, she just doesn't know what is happening. If she had mated and layed fertile eggs, she would instinctively know what to do. As she is laying infertile eggs, she knows she is meant to do something with them, but doesn't know what. (Hens can tell if an egg is fertile or not), It may be worthwhile getting her a nesting box (most of the larger pet shops have them in stock), if she has somewhere to nest, she can lay her eggs there and then leave them when she realises they aren't fertile. Give her calcium supplements to replace the calcium she looses when she is making an egg.

well you have a choice throw out the eggs as soon as she lays or BUY a male for her and let her breed, chronic egg layers will die sooner , they are depleting there calcium then you end up with an EGG bound bird and die so i would let her NEST buy a male or barrow one, share the babies,
