How do i get my cockateil to perch on my finger and sit on my shoulder?
-
I have a 9 month old male cockateil named Link. When i brought him home he was crazy, running around his cage etc. But over the last few days he has really calmed down, he enjoys eating millet from my finger and sometimes he lets me pet his stomach while doing this. But i would really like to get to the point where he can calmly sit on my finger and shoulder. I heard online that if you put your finger at there feet and push your finger back a little they will naturally step up. I have tried this numerous times and he seems to get nervous and bite me. Other times he will put one foot on then get nervous and back away. Today he was playing with his toy then i put my finger at his feet and push it and he stepped on! Then once he realized what he was perched on, he put his crest down as if to bite and then he panicked and flew off and chirped loudly for the next 15 minutes and wouldn't eat millet from my hand for the rest of the day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated on how i could teach my cockateil that i am no threat and perch on my finger and shoulder.

Answer:
Well first of all yes that is how you get them on your finger, but since he is nervous all you need to do is keep building trust and every once in a while try and you should start seeing results.

Well make sure he doesn't bite first(key rule!!!!) Well if he doesn't bite try putting a treat on the far side of your hand so he has t get on your hand for a treat then he should be on your hand move him to your finger. Shoulder well don't do that until you have mastered being on your finger then take the treat and slowly move it up your arm so your Cockateil goes up on your shoulder and don't be afraid if you trust him not to bite you good chance he won't bite you. Good luck and congrats cockateils are good birds also if a treat doesn't work you can buy a certain type of nectar that birds love!!!
