How can I teach my conure to stop biting?

How do I stop my conure parrot from biting me?!?!?

  • I own a seven month old rose-crowned conure and he is just the best. He can do minor tricks and can even say Kiwi (his name), whistle, and make kissing noises. He is usually well-behaved around strangers, but the only thing I do not like about him is that he sometimes bites!!! He'll be sitting on my hand, perfectly fine, and all of a sudden he'll reach out and nip my finger really hard. He once even made me bleed a little bit. What also annoys me is that he thinks it's a game. I'll pull my finger away and a couple of seconds later go to touch him, thinking he's over his little moody spurt, and he'll do it again! He keeps on doing it! I tried to look up stuff on google, but it's all to confusing, talking about the behaviour of parrots and their natural instincts and stuff. And I've also tried youtube, but it's just the same thing. Can someone with experience please help me??? Thanks!!!

  • Answer:

Every time he bites, remove him & put him away. He'll soon learn biting doesn't get him the attention he wants from you. Conures love to nibble & play with fingers. Unfortunately it does eventually turn into biting that hurts. Encourage playing & nibbling with toys. My sun conure was the same but it didn't take her long to stop biting when I started having nothing to do with her when she did bite me. Conures are 'clingons'. They'll do anything to be with you & to refuse to associate with them when they bite makes them pull their head in a little. Don't use tobasco source! Birds do like hot spicy things but tobasco source may put your bird in the vet clinic. It's full of stuff that's bad for your bird & it's just mean.

We have a "green-cheeked conure", and he tried the biting game, too- We just put him back in the cage , and said, No!No!, firmly , ignored him for a short time , and then he's fine-He's 28 years old , but was treated badly when we got him- Now , he has done a complete turn around-He is a very loving bird, but very old , so he gets lots of t.l.c.- Good-luck-

I have 3 Sun Conures-Dad & kids., I have had Baby 6 years & kids 1 year. None are caged but toilet trained. I bought Baby from a pet store and he was mutulated by severe wing clipping and no tail and he did NOT like my blond hair (pet store had blond hair!) After spending 24 hours a day with him as a constant companion he would still bite and get blood..this went on for about 4 years! I was in tears and a little nervous when he was by my face. After the female & Baby had eggs he is a completely sweet bird. No more biting at all. I have written several article for the Avian Health Network and during my research found that ALL birds need a flock to associate with. I think this is what cured my Baby of biting...he had his own flock to teach..I wasn't smart enough to be a bird!!

for one thing when you move your finger he thinks its a game,a firm no should work ,what will also work is time out don't give him the satisfaction of eye to eye contact put hem in his cage for about 10 minuets, then try again, keep trying as soon as he finds out you aren't going to give him Attn he should stop

Put red Tabasco sauce on one finger. Curl the other fingers under. After he bites this finger a few times he will not do it again. This is how I cured mine.
