How can I teach my conure to stop biting?

How to teach my conure to stop biting and step-up!?

  • I just recently rescued a beautiful 2 year old Pineapple Cheek Conure (that is what the guy i got him from said he was). He is a beautiful bird but he's very aggressive. The old owner had him in a dirty home with a very dirty cage and i was surprised the baby was still alive. When i went to attempt to touch him he automatically went into biting me. Now the owner did not give me nothing but a bag of old nasty food and when he tried to put him in the carrier i bought for him, he practically threw a towel over him and threw him inside the carrier. When i brought him home he didnt want to be friendly AT ALL! But i kind of got him to at least let him pet him with my finger on his head but he wants to bite and he doesnt even know how to step-up. He just goes and bites and doesnt want to be held. I am happy I saved him but I want to know how can i get him to stop biting and at least let himself be held. Thank you!

I would guess that the bird is very, very frightened. It will take a lot of time for the little guy to learn to trust you, after such an awful start with that former owner. We have three parrots, one of which is a rescued Jenday conure. He also bit me a lot for the first couple of months. What is important for you to do is to remain calm and soothing when you interact with him. Do you have a cage for him? Check craigslist for a used cage with bars that are 1/2 inch wide. A 30"X30" X36" cage would give him lots of room to move around. Put some toys in it to play with. Conures are very active and curious. Go visit a pet shop to look at what they have. Be careful not to buy anything that has a paint or varnish finish as that could be harmful. Put his cage in a place where he can feel safe, but not lonely. We have ours in the kitchen against a wall near the window. That way, we can give them little treats of veggies and fruit when we are fixing a meal or snack. Make sure he has fresh water and good food every day. We like Zupreme for crunchies, and we give ours a lot of fresh food and seeds. Every day, talk to him calmly when you feed him. Start with a stick rather than your finger to learn to step up. When he gets used to stepping up on the stick, you can move to using your finger. But realize that this could take a few months. You have to invest the time with him so that he stops being afraid and learns to trust you. He will, after a while, if you are patient and consistant. Ask lots of questions and don't give up. Below are a couple of links to get you started. Good luck to you and your new feathered friend. :-)

Let him get used to the cage and put a blanket over the cage. It might take a long time for him to get used to it's new home. If i were that bird, i might do the same.

Build trust first. I was given a very mean amazon. She was 23 when I got her and I could tell she had never felt real affection. Persistence and consistence are very key. Dont back away when your bird bites. Dont be incredibly aggressive in trying to befriend it. Always never let it think it is your master. My amazon used to make me bleed all over but I never showed pain. When you get him to a point of trust that you do love him and want him happy get him to do ladder steps repeatedly with both hands. To much attention is bad and not enough is bad. Every bird is different so find his balance of attention. Eventually he will get tired of being mad and have a real life. I never lock my girl up in the cage. Thats my preference but it also gives her a sense of freedom and companionship. Your bird is my favorite kind to teach love to because they always seem to gain some loyalty for you once this trust is built. No luck about it. Only love. Love conquers all. My girl Cookie is the greatest example of a rehabilitated bird. Find his favorite fruit. My girl loves peaches. I hope this is fun for you and not so much a burden. You feel so good about yourself when you get him where he needs to be.
