What is the white stuff on top of chicken poop?

Why is this happening to my chicken?

  • Hi, my chicken ( Light sussex) has been having runny poo lately. White, yellow and greyish in colour. But this morning, I went out and there was black runny poo with like a tiny solid bit in the middle. it was Really gross! It reminded me of runny tarmac! Why does she have black runny poo? Could she have worms or something else? She is showing no other symptoms of anything.. eating, drinking, laying, pottering about... all completly normal! My other 3 chickens are fine too. We feed them warm porridge every morning and evening. They're free range about the garden. Used to give them lots of random stuff e.g. spegetti, fruit, veg, bread... but have cut down since her poop became loose. What is it? Should I be worried? They were all wormed about 3/4 months ago. !!! Thanks !!! xx

This book might help you, maybe not. Just give it a try. She doesn't sound sick, though. Keeping chickens : the essential guide to enjoying and getting the best from chickens - by Hobson, J. C. Jeremy.

first off the person that keeps telling askers to take a chicken to the vet must have her head firmly inserted in her anal cavity so back to the asker...have you been feeding any grains or chicken feed? chickens can not live off porridge they need hard grains or pellets to make the digestive system work have you gave any grit? they need grit to grind their food in the gizzard i would say they just need a good chicken diet and all should be well good luck

The soft fruit could be a contributing factor-try cutting it out for a week to see if there is any difference.

She doesn't sound ill, I used to own chickens, until a fox sorta ate them... I think that's just normal for chickens, but if you feel concerned, just take her to the vet. Hope I help. x

If she is still laying i dont know, but if she isn't it could be that when her egg was developing it fell in the wrong tube because when an egg is fully grown it goes through the cloaca but if it is small it pass into the anal tube and get smashed and we all know what rotten egg looks like. hope this helped sorry if it didn't

Simple, take her to the vet. It's the best you can do for your chicken

Are you chickens supplemented with actual chicken pellets? What types of veggies do you give them?
