What's a good cockatiel cage?

My female cockatiel laid her first egg?

  • Hi, my female cockatiel laid her first egg today. She is about 2 years old maybe a little older. She has been in the cage with the male for 4 days now. At first i thought they were getting along good. She would follow him everywhere when they were out of their cage. I have seen them rubbing heads once and eating together. They are in their own room for their privacy so i don't see what their doing all the time. The thing is when i walk in the room and talk to them the female comes down to the perch closest to me and starts doing her mating call and when the male comes down to her she goes after him. Neither one are hand tamed but the female will sometimes get on my finger. I hear the male doing his mating call throughout the day but never here the female unless i'm next to her. Whats the chance her egg is fertile?

  • Answer:

There is a chance the egg is fertilized as long as a male is with her. She will lay 1 egg every 2 days and will lay between 2 and 8 in total. You might not hear the females mating call but she might still be doing it but she might not but still have mated with the male. Good luck with your birds!

Please don't breed your birds! You don't know what your doing, you risk hurting the birds because of that. Buy the male a seprate cage and please keep them away from eachother.

If you have got them in a cage, forget the idea of breeding,it will not be large enough. The pair have not even bonded yet.If you intend trying to breed, then get the right equipment first.

aww thats cute :) pretty good chance id say especially if you leave the egg in there for a while for the male to go too

There is a good chance it is fertile... in a few days you can go in a dark room and gently hold the egg above a bright flashlight and see the baby bird's heart beating and as it grows see it kicking around and moving inside the egg. Just be very gentle. You should look and see because usually father birds help care for the young. Also, if they are not hand tamed and you want to train them... If you make the room very dark and they can't see you can out your hand in the cage and nudge their feet with your finger and they will probably step and learn to stand on it. Once they get use to it gradually lighten the room a little at a time until they see they are on you.
