Hello, what you should do, is not feed him the seeds anymore. He will get hungry enough and eat the other foods. It may seem cruel not to feed him those seeds, but the seeds are probably causing more damage than him not eating for a day or two. (since they are very high in fat, and can cause organ damage) What you should do, is not feed him for a day. Take him to his eating area, and fill his bowl with a variety of fruits and veggies. (you can also cook the vegies, but with no salt or butter, things such as corn, beans, and sweet potatoes) After you do that, he will most likely be hungry enough to eat those fruits or veggies. You can determine which one he likes more, and feed him that more often. Always offer the other fruits and veggies though, and he will probably eventually eat it. Also, do not quit offering the fruits and veggies just because he throws it on the ground. That needs to be a part of his diet, and seeds only need to be offered as treats. It may be difficult to get him to accept these things, but in the future it will be worth it! If you have any other questions, feel free to email me. I'll be glad to help. [email protected]

I took in a rescued Congo African Grey 2 years ago that only ate sunflower seeds. After a trip to the avian vet for a thorough checkup, I was advised to continue feeding him the seeds, to prevent him from starving himself to death. In addition, I was to also offer (in a separate dish) lots of brightly coloured fruits (tropical) and vegetables along with Avi-cakes and Nutri-berries, to entice him into eating a wider variety of foods. It took several weeks of consistently offering him other food choices before he finally decided that these foods WERE food. It also helps that we sat with him, eating similar things, to encourage a little "social eating." Don't expect your Grey to instantly accept other things and like them. It takes time to convince them that there is more to the world of eating other than sunflower seeds. BTW, that rescue Grey of ours has only just given up his sunflower seeds recently (we allowed him a small handful once a day) and he gave them up on his own. He learned that there are lots better things to eat besides seed. :) For more healthy eating ideas, visit this site: http://www.anafricangrey.ca/category/recipes/

It may take many different things before you find that right food or foods. Try some sugar free apple sauce in a spoon..you pretend to eat some also..make it sound really good. Do this with all her new foods.. Try some can pears,or peaches..rinse them Toast, with a little butter, or sugar free jelly.. Scramble eggs..noodles, once you find that special food than start introducing fresh fruits like her apples.. You have allow her to keep eating some of her sunflower seeds..birds are know to starve them self Once you have her finicky eating habits under control than you can cut back on the not so good foods Do not give up..I see this many times at when a new bird comes in at the shelter Taking him to a vet is not a bad ideal either
