How old do you have to be to work at a Vets?

Are there any vets that only work with birds?

  • vets with schooling on bird health and cures and treatments for ailments

  • Answer:

Yes, they're avian certified vets. They have to go through a year's specialized training AFTER they get their license to practice veterinary medicine. Avian vets are few and far between, though, because of the time and expense required. However, they are the most knowledgeable, and if you can find one close to you, they are well worth using! If you can't find an avian vet close to you, find a bird club in your city and see who the most popular vet is. That's the best way to find a vet who knows enough about birds to treat them, in the absence of an avian certified vet.

Absolutely there are vets that only treat birds. They are called Certified Avian Veterinarians. It takes a long time working with birds to be able to pass the test to become Certified in Avian medicine. There are very few in the United States. I believe only around 150. Those that have been working with birds for a long time have done wonderful things to help pet birds. One that comes to mind is an avian vet that made artificial lets and feet for a cockatoo when her own had to be removed due to an accident. They can help with avian behavior, nutrition and care in general.
