Answer:
First you need to determine if it's a turtle or a tortious. Then you need to research how to take care of the specific kind you have. You need to make sure that you give them lots of love and attention and you feed them everyday and let them out to walk around. Keep them safe. You also want to make sure you have a vet for it. Take it for check ups once a year and definantly get a check up for it right away to make sure it doesn't have worms. If it's a toritous then they do not live in water and you will drown them if you treat them like a turtle.

everything depends on species, tortoises live on land, most turtles are semi aquatic. personally i would suggest u find out what kind of turtle/tortoise you want then google its name and the word caresheet. also get yourself signed up to a tortoise/turlte forum.

They are very easy to take care of. Find a tank or a tub to put them in. Fill it up with water. Put in some rocks to make it look nice and for the turtle to step onto to get a nice tan. For food, you can feed them fish food (pellets), raw meat (shrimp), veggies, or bugs (roaches, but make sure they werent killed via "Raid", the poor turtle might get poisoned). When the water starts looking dirty, dump the water out and refill with clean water. They really don't require too much attention. Good luck!

You're quite right that you need to know how to look after one before you get it. Start by finding out what kind you are getting. The care that is best for one will kill another species. Once you know what you are dealing with, go online and do a search, see what books you can get through your library (the reference librarian can help), and go to the block in Y!A that says "Search for questions" . type in the species, hit "Search", and prepare to get lots of answers dumped into your lap. Only after you have become an expert (at least on paper) should you get the setup and then the turtle or tortoise.
