Can't decide on which of the two lizards to get first: Savannah Monitor or Green Iguana?
-
I'm kind of stuck on deciding which of the two that I should get first because i'm interested in both and fully aware of the aggression that they possess, large caging and how expensive that they can be and I constantly do my research everyday, and I mean "EVERYDAY", so please don't say get a bearded dragon or a gecko or something, but say someone that's getting into large lizards and they had a choice to choose between an Iguana or a small species of Monitor that's relatively docile then which would you choose: Green Iguana or Savannah Monitor and why?

Answer:
The only actual first hand experience I have with these guys is from my mother in law. When I first met her, she had two iguanas and 1 savanna. The savanna was a big slob. It sat around all day and didn't do much - it was getting up there in age though when I met her. It use to sleep in bed with her at night - she's a crazy old reptile lady though ;-) The iguanas were pretty fascinating. She was one of the owners that gave them free reign of the house. Youde be watching tv and suddenly this gigantic iguana would jump up on the couch behind you! The iguanas had major attitude - if they didn't want to be bothered they would whip you with their tail and it hurt! So I guess it depends what you're looking for in a lizard. I think the iguanas have much more of a in-your-face personality but also more attitude, whereas the savannah in my experience was a very gentle creature. My experience with this guys is limited to one pet owner and she's a little unorthodox in her husbandry of reptiles so who knows...most people don't let iguanas roam the house at their own free will and also don't sleep in bed with their monitors. So in short, if I was to choose, I would say a monitor. I really loved his gentle disposition and chill attitude. All the best.. And yes you can call me rebec!! Iguanas are hard to keep food wisely and they get easily sick.

Personally, I think neither. My dad had an iguana for six years and then it died, but he did everything he was supposed to. Any type of monitors feed by biting, then following the creature until it dies, then eats it. They have toxins that enter the bloodstream, so as soon as you get bitten, you'll have to go to a doctor right away to get it fixed, or you'll die in about a week (no joke; they're called monitors for a reason). I know you researched and know the aggression and all that, but I would find something big that isn't so aggressive. If you really want one though, they're both as good and bad as each other so there's really no deciding. I would think of how much you would pay to go to the vet when they get sick or how much space you're willing to give away to them as well as time and amount of effort to keep them safe and healthy, as well as you.
