How do turtles breathe under water?

Can map turtles breathe in water?

  • I have a map turtle and I was wondering if he can drink under water.

  • Answer:

    Map turtles are called semi-aquatic for a reason. They love the water, but they need to come up for air and basking. They can eat underwater (as mine prefers to), so I'm pretty sure they can drink underwater.

No turtles cant breath under water they hold large amounts of air in a thing called a papilla like a submarine. Studied this for a year!

Some turtles can extract dissolved oxygen from water. So far as I know, map turtles can't.

seeing as they aren't fish, they can't breathe. i don't think they can drink underwater either...
