My chameleon is doing really bad?

I put moss in my Chameleon's tank from the woods out back is that bad for it?

  • I live in the Pacific NW & we have tons of moss here, so I opted to grab some off the tree outside & rinse it off before sticking it in our chameleon's tank. Will this hurt him? I just didn't feel like spending the cash for a tiny bag of it when it's everywhere round here. I figured it's a lizard from the rainforest he'll like it....right?? The humidity has been great ever since...Thursday 2-7-08

    As said above, i would spend the extra few bucks on buying that little package off moss. It's better than spending $$$ on vet bills IF he were to catch a parasite. Moss is nothing but bacteria, so i would not risk placing it inside your Chem's tank. And believe me, i know how ridiculous the prices are. lol. But i would rather be safe than sorry & insure the health of my beloved reptile. Make the right choice! ^_^ Best of Luck

Ummmm..... He probably likes it but it isn't good for him. Things from outside needs to be sanitized before going in the cage with your friend. He can get very sick from germs that he has never been exposed to before- assuming that he was captive bred(I'm sure he was). I wouldn't risk it and just buy the little bag. They grow that moss in a safe clean environment sterilized from germs ane bacteria....

It's tough to answer because you aren't very specific. If you have a true chameleon, looking at it crosseyed might cause damage. Anoles, which are often called chameleons, are tougher. If you dug moss from the ground, there MIGHT be problems. If you are referring to peat moss, you have no worries. That is practically sterile. As long as the moss is already in the tank, you may as well leave it. Just keep an eye on your lizard to head off any problems before they become major.
