What keeps water out of our head?

My turtle keeps sticking its head out of the water?

  • my turtle keeps sticking its head out of the water it looks like it wants air but when i put it on the platform it just JUMPS right off i dont know what to do should i put more water in

  • Answer:

Do you have lights on him, maybe he is too warm. Put a place he can get under a little cover to hide. Turtles are reptiles and as such breathe air, although sometimes they will stay underwater for a while. Normally, if he has enough water that he can submerge in that is all he needs. Make sure to change it on a regular basis and let it set out a few hours before putting it in with him if its chlorinated tap water.

It is normal, they do breath air. My turtle wont stay on the dock till it feels comfortable to, if im around it wont go on the dock at all, try putting a piece of paper so it wont see you.

Yes, he wants air. They have to breathe! They're not fish bud! But he also wants to be in the water to keep hydrated, so just leave him alone, and he'll be fine. He knows what to do!

If it's an aquatic turtle,it needs to be in water it can swim in,but it needs to breathe air. It will go on the ramp when he's in the mood, and when frightened, will stay under the water.

turtles have to breathe air, so they will of course put their heads up out of the water. the turt will go up on the platform of its own free will when it wants to. it could be that it is timid when you are around and maybe it goes up there when you are not around? i still have one turtle that only basks when she thinks there is no one around. (they are outside on porch and sometimes if i don't move a lot i can peek at her through the window). but if you try and put the turt up there yourself, like you said, it will jump down. all of my turtles do the same thing:) (the purpose of them basking is to dry off which they need to do sometimes and to bask to get the light and vitamins they need to digest the calcium they need in their diets. its not necessarily for air. for just air they'll put their heads up as you see your turt doing.)
