How do you keep a sand substrate moist for hermit crabs?

How do u keep sand, for hermit crabs, moist?

  • without making it soaked, dried, smelly, nasty, or bad for the hermit crabs or the owner.

  • Answer:

Sand for hermit crabs should be the consistancy of sand that you would use to build a sand castle, I would use a brackish dechlorinated water to keep it moist, That is the cocsensus among hermit crab owners that have been doing it for a long time, to keep it from drying out you will have to keep adding fresh water so it doesn't get too salty. Unfortunately sand does not have the composting capabilities that forest bedding or eco fiber that is the first choise among long term serious keepers, so it will get smelly and nasty quicker than eco fiber.

What is your tank setup? Moist sand tends to be fairly easy if everything is set up right. What kind of lid do you have? A mesh lid tends to be to open, but if you cover some of it, either with plexi or saran wrap (easier fix) it will help the humidity stay in which in turn makes the sand a little moist. Keep your water dish on the same side of the tank as the heater. (also best to cover that side of the tank) it will help keep the evaporating water in.
