What plastic wrap prevents evaporation best?

What substrate works best for you to keep humidity levels up?

  • I have a ball python that I keep in a glass aquarium with a ventilated lid, and I'm having trouble keeping humidity in her cage. I've tried a couple different things so far: put plastic wrap over one side of the lid, put a water dish under her lamp and on the cooler side of the tank, mist the tank usually once a day, also stuck a couple damp sponges in there for more water evaporation. But humidity isn't going above 35%. I know I'll have to switch substrates to help this along. I use aspen mulch now. What can you recommend that will help my humidity problem? I've heard of using cypress mulch, or "repti-bark," but any other advice would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Answer:

we use ground up corn cob and mist every other day and our hygrometers read about 55-65%. at our local pet store, it is like 7.99 per bag and when they "make stool" it clumps around it like kitty litter making clean up easy.

I always used Cyprus mulch and had no problems with keeping the humidity up. You could try more of a soil type substrate and put some peat moss in the tank and mist the tank daily. Another thing you can do is put some damp paper towels in your snake's hide but you have to be careful about that because if you get it to wet you can hurt the snake.

Just so you know, you can get the same bark as the repti bark at home depot, its sold as orchid bark there. And its great for holding humidity. But, I've never heard balls need a really high humidity. Most of the large collections and breeders I've seen keep them on newspaper, only misting them daily in shed cycles. I've never kept balls, so I have no experience with them, but you may wasn't to look for some more info before you get to worried about it.

yeah you could mist once or twice a day and reptile bark works really really good. NOT repti-bark!!! reptile bark. I use it for my brazilian rainbow boas cage and it is constantly at about 90% humidity ( i have a large water bowl, fogger and it stays really humid.). My corn snakes cage is usually at about 60% without misting so it works! hope this helped!

yea us something like "repti-bark" or you could by a humidifier from a pets store or pharmacy.

Hunter9911

put a large dish of moss in and soak it that should help... mist it a bunch too!

With balls you want a semi humid environment but dry substrate so drenching it with misting and damp moss is actually not the way to go. You want to air to be around 55-60%, which is very easy to do in a plastic, PVC or tub but a bit more challenging in the tank / not impossible though. Keep doing what you're doing and change the substrate to any of the following: Coconut husk / chips or compressed (compressed comes in big cubes That u mix w water) Cypress mulch Repti bark Spagnham moss or a mix the moss with any of the following: Aspen (thin kind), any of the substrates listed above, jungle mix. These will all aid in humidity. Good luck.
