What to feed a little lizard caught in the park?

What do feed my lizard?

  • So, I caught a lizard. (we are on vacation in florida) we are leaving in a few days and I plan to take it home. (to chicago) Well, what should I feed it? I have water for it.

  • Answer:

Its not a good idea to take it from its habitat, but I totally get wanting to keep it. But if it isnt happy and wont eat or drink, then letting it go would kill it because it would be in such a different place. You might also need to have a heat lamp like the other guy said, since it came from a very hot place. You might want to feed it bugs (like cricket, I have read that lizards love those) that they can hunt down to eat. I had a lizard once and it would NOT eat dead things, because its natural instinct to prefer fresh food. About the water, it might not be okay with just tap water because that has some harmful stuff for small creatures sometimes. I had newts and I had to DEchlorinate their water or it made their skin break out... so if it doesnt drink the water you can try something like that or bottled water. The best idea would be to figure out what kind of lizard it is and look up the specifics about caring for it, or preferably go buy one (you might be able to get them for just a few dollars, my newts were $2 each) and then you will have a higher chance of keeping it happy.

Mate I really would not take it home, lizards to be kept as pets need a very specific environment. Heat lamps, UVB lamps, large safe enclosure away from potential predaters. It does not sound like you have thought this through, or researched it. If you get its environment wrong their is a good chance it may die, and depending on the laws where you are you could be breaking them. Depending what kind of lizard will depend on food most eat live crickets, dandelion greens, Collard greens, Mustard greens, Bok choy, Kale, Turnip greens, Escarole and Chicory are among the easiest to find and the best to use. My advise would be let it go, do some research, and get a tame one from a pet shop once you know what you are doing and the long term commitment (lizards if looked after correctly can live 10 - 12 years). Oh and you should not give it any food that is bigger than the space between his eyes, that can cause serious injury with their digestive tract. My lizard will only eat live crickets. Lizards will get stressed over long journeys if you attempt to take it home.
