How do i over winter my Yellow-bellied slider turtle?

Can some one tell me how to over winter my Yellow-bellied slider turtle I live in spain but it gets very cold in the winter i have a one and half foot pond that he is in at the moment it doesn't freeze here but gets cold a banana plant cant servive outside in winter here please help he's fine now as it is hot but does get cold could you also give some advise on feeding him i have been giving him veg and fruit and tined sardines cant buy pellets here but you can get loads of fresh fish please help really need all the advise i can get, thank you
