Why is my ball python bleeding from the mouth?

My ball python is opening his mouth on me. should i not be nervous?

  • he isnt snapping or hissing. hes just pushing his nose on my skin and begins to open his mouth. once i realized his mouth was opening i jerked my arm away, scared lol. ive had him for a year and a half, hes never bit me before and his slow movements dont imply that he wants to(other than the face that he began to open his mouth on my skin).. i did startle him once i jerked my arm away from his opening mouth, but im not sure if thats even relevant.

  • Answer:

He's probably just yawning, snakes tend to yawn alot. Lol. Like the other people have said, he would rear his head back if he was to bite you. :)

You shouldn't be alarmed, if he wants to bite you he'll rear back and either bob his head a little or move it side to side. Biting is a strike, not a gentle gape.

Ball pythons do yawn often and this may be what he is doing also, it sounds that you may have a scent on you that he may be associating with food and trying to swallow by instinct. Try washing your arms and hands prior to handling your snake.

If he only did it once then he's most likely just yawning. Is it possible that he's shedding? If he continues rubbing his nose on you he may be trying to break the skin on his nose so he can shed. If it was a bite he would have pulled his head in towards his body and striked before you could blink.

no you shouldnt be nervous hes most likely rearranging his jaws
