My turtle is really depressed because my other turtle died. What can I do to make her happy and normal?
-
Hi! I am 10 years old. My turtle's name is Rosalie, and she is a red-eared turtle. I used to have another turtle, but it died. Ever since I removed the other turtle, Sphinx, from the cage, Rosalie has been so depressed. Rosalie doesn't eat, constantly sleeps, and rarely moves! I really want her to grow back to the wonderful turtle she is. I really don't know what to do! Please help!

Answer:
If you can't get her another turtle, hang a mirror outside her tank so she can see herself. Also, she may be reacting not to the death of her friend, but the change in environment. Turtles usually don't like to be with others, they are very territorial. She senses something that used to be there isn't there anymore. Give her time, let her sleep, try and feed her every day and what she doesn't consume, scoop out with a net so it doesn't dirty your tank. Turtles can go 2 weeks without food. It is winter, and they change moods according to season. My turtle does that every winter for a few weeks. He eats less and acts really lazy. Make sure her water is warm about 75-78 degrees so she doesn't get a cold. If the water is too cold, they go into hibernation mode and sleep a lot. If she is not better or hasn't eaten, take her to a vet. It will cost about 55 dollars for an appointment, or you can call them and ask for professional advice. Make sure they specialize in exotic pets and reptiles.

Are you sure Rosalie isn't sick. I'd have the vet check her out. I'm not a turtle expert but I don't think that reptiles usually pine for each other.

sweetie turtles do not get depressed, but the fact that rosalie is not moving or eating could indicate that she is sick rather than missing her friend, the signs you have described and the fact one turtle has already died would indicate sickness rather than a glum turtle, do you have a water heater, uv lighting and a basking bulb for your turtle, are you feeding the correct diet, here is a site for you to check you have the correct conditions to keep your turtle healthy http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/caresheet-red_ear_slider.htm http://www.wnyherp.org/care-sheets/turtles/red-ear-slider.php but sorry honey your turtle may be sick and require treatment rather than just be sad, i hope rosalie gets better but getting her a playmate will not help here, getting her well again will help.

If your parents let you, maybe you could get a new turtle as a friend for Rosalie. If not, I bet with time, Rosalie will go back to her normal self -- just like humans, after someone close to us dies, we need some time to grieve then we go on with our lives. Rosalie is in her sad period now, but I bet pretty soon she will be acting like she did before. Good luck!
