My dog having "vicious tendencies?"?
-
I am considering switching pet insurance companies. I was just looking at one in particular, which seemed good. I always look at their criteria, and in this particular one it won't cover dogs with "vicious tendencies". What exactly does that mean? Does that exclude my dog? (can be aggressive to other dogs) or is that more about dogs with a bite history against people? Also, another company covers Staffordshire Bull Terriers, but apparently doesn't cover Irish Staffordshire Bull Terriers? How can they tell the difference? What if i went with them, then they decided somewhere down the line that they won't cover him because they think he's an Irish Staffie? Is it best to just avoid that one? Sorry, i'm not good with things like this. I first insured my dog years ago and just basically picked the first one i came across under basic cover. But he's getting on now and i need to be more careful!

Answer:
Pet Plan defines vicious tendencies as "Your dog has not attacked, bitten or been aggressive towards a person, animal, or shown any aggressive tendencies." which I would think would be applied across the insurance providers to reduce their exposure to claims of a reasonable apprehension that a dog would bite/attack or has bitten or attacked a person or animal. https://www.petplan.co.uk/pet-insurance/quote.asp Pet Plan does go on to say on their website that they still may insure a dog and to contact them to discuss the exact circumstances of the incident. It may be that you either wait until [as with Pet Plan 5 years have elapsed since the incident] or remain with the same pet insurance provider. With regard to the pet insurance provider that you are consider, the maximum benefit is set low at £4,000 and would not cover a hip replacement surgery at today's prices, though a good point is it offers cover for life. A word of caution would be to consider one of the larger established providers because consider the pickle Halifax pet insurance policy holders are in now following the decision to discontinue insurance because it was not profitable. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/news/article-2112963/FSA-tells-Lloyds-grip-pet-insurance-fiasco.html

well if i remember correctly, in a post earlier today or yesterday you answered a question about dog abuse and used a personal story, in it you explain how your dog attacked another dog that was off leash because it came to close to yours. you said that it would not let go of it's neck until you physically knocked it (hard) over the head. yes, your dog has 'vicious tendencies'
There is ONLY the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and nothing else. No "Irish," no "English." If your dog is a SBT, then that's what it is and is covered by said insurance company. "Vicious tendencies" usually is a nice way of saying "Vicious breeds." Which would of course, include Bully breeds. Others, it could mean a dog with a bite history. You'd have to ask the company. EDIT: Wow, that company is retarded. Sorry. There is NO such thing as an "American Staffordshire Bull Terrier!" Racing Greyhound?! Since when is that a separate and "vicious" breed? They have "Canary Dog" and "Presa Canario" as separate breeds, when they are the same. This insurance company is stupid. I would not go with them, they don't know a dog breed from a stick in the mud. Oh Lord, I just noticed: "Pit Bull Mastiff" and "Pit Bull Terrier." OMFG. This is seriously the dumbest thing I have ever seen. Pit Bull Terrier and APBT are separate, and Pit Bull Mastiff is a breed....WTF do these people get this info? /rant.

I dont think the breed between a irsh staffie, and a normal one would make any difference. there isnt any difference, just a different place where they originated. You really shouldnt have to worry about it. But im not a professional.

An example of a dog with vicious tendencies would be a Pit Bull. Some breeds are not mentioned because there are hundreds of breeds worldwide, and they can't possibly list all of them. INSURANCE: See comparison chart: http://www.petinsurancereview.com/dog.asp
